So school was back but just half day. They got a proof reading homework and some mental maths - so to work right away. Came home tired. Temp and compass points should be ok to sort out. Maybe a few worksheets of just these areas would help. I am sure you could find some online. I find my DS makes silly mistakes on the time interval questions -sometimes works it out as if there are 100 mins in an hour instead of 60! Comprehension is ok but sometimes can't find words or phrases meaning the same quickly enough. Seems to miss it, then re read and try again...and wastes time. He is better now than he was in P6 but there is still a bit to go!0

Compass? Temp?
We haven't had any of these on the tests we've been doing. What papers are you doing? We were given fairfields ones to complete over the summer0 -
We have come across these in the Easons papers and Windmill I think. I take it the temp just means learning how to use negative numbers. The compass points have been on several of the schools tests we did in P6. They are the sort of topic that can be learned quite quickly - I found that making little model thermometer with values and looking an actual compass helped or chalk cpmpass points on ground and physically move clockwise / anticlockwise etc.
Not sure what Fairfields papers are - we got WIndmill ones and I bought Easons ones for extra practice. Haven't got into real papers yet.0 -
Hi, Sorry for intruding. My child is just going into P6. One of the other mums that I'm friendly with has withdrawn her son (my child's friend) from sport this year to concentrate on his transfer test for next year . Is this the usual thing? What stage of P6 would you start practicing?0
-
That's crazy! The poor child. Most schools start work about February in p6. My son loves sport and I won't be stopping him doing any sporting activity. Exercise is good for the body and the mind!0

Welcome spendaholic. The start of P6 is too early for transfer preparation in my opinion. They have a lot of topics to get through. Our transfer test prep didn't start until Easter when all the work was covered. Interestingly our P7 teacher encouraged parents to keep things in proportion and not to withdraw child from all their other activities. He said that those who did best (as well as having ability) worked consistently, did the practice tests etc) but were not overloaded. The children are only 10-11 and too much pressure can be counter productive.0

Our head said the same. Also said something about not wanting the children to peak too early as after this point they get fed up and stop preforming as well. The biggest battle is keeping the kids interested in it, if they've had to give up everything fun they'll only hate it. #13weeks0

Hope we are not going to peak too early here. Son did test on Thur and got 88%. Doubt if he can climb much above this - the mistakes were really careless ones. Think I'll just do the homeworks, the school tests and not overdo it,0

My son is doing his first practice test in school today. I'm actually nervous for him. I wonder how bad the nerves will be for us both during the real thing!0

Hiya have lurking for a while!! My daughter is in p7 and will be sitting the gl paper. We dod ten Fairfield papers over the summer with scores varying from 68% to 85%. She has done two ptq practise papers (one maths one english) since going back. She got 91% and 85%. She working really hard and is so pleased with her progress. Its quite hard to find out how each percentage mark relates to a grade. Therefore no idea how to guess how she'll do on the day. Can anyone help explain it to me? Tia0
