- If you're running Windows XP or something then the defrag command probably isn't clever enough (or recent enough) to know what an SSD is, and it could do harm. But...
- The disk optimisation built into Windows these days (from Windows 7 onwards I think) is aware of SSDs and running the disk optimisation, despite the command line version still being called 'defrag', will mainly run a 'Trim', which is useful on SSDs.
- In some cases the windows disk optimisation does deliberately do a kind of defragmentation on an SSD, but it's not the same as trying to defragment as if it's a spinning disk.

Thanks for that esuhl, I hadn't heard about that issue. I put Samsung 840 EVO 500GB drives in both our laptops a year or so back. My wife uses hers more than I use mine and we have noticed that her machine seems to take longer to boot these days, although we're only talking a few seconds.
Next job, to track down those firmware updates.
Samsung Magician Software for PC
Use it if you are not already doing so, to optimise the drive and to install firmware updates.
Run a clean install of the OS if you like.0 -

Thanks ND, I had found it. I've just completed the first update on my laptop and it went very smoothly. The latest version of Magician overwrote the old version and then I was prompted to update the firmware which it downloaded automatically ... a couple of reboots and home and dry. It's noticeably faster already.
I'll do Mrs O's laptop next ... I pray that will be as uneventful or I'll get it in the neck!... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -
Thanks for all the advice above - seems that I'm not the only one experiencing a slow down.
I've just arrived back home (was 100 miles away this morning) so will read, absorb and act on the advice once I get unpacked and so on.
I really appreciate the time you've all taken to respond, I'll let you know how it goes!0 -

Don't neglect to use the software's tools to optimise the drive, once installed.0 -
79GB is a bit more than just windows and a few programs.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

The C drive shows 79gb used of 96 and is red. I've uninstalled everything I can.
I quoted the wrong numbers - now that I've taken off Photoshop Elements there is 12.4gb free of 91.2gb.
What is loaded - and remaining is:
Google Chrome
IE
Accessories
CC Cleaner
CDex
Dymo
Games
Intel
Intel Corporation
Maintenance
Malwaresbytes
MS Office suite 2010
MS Silverlight
Samsung
Share point
Start up
SUPERantispyware
WildTangent Games
Windows Live
No documents, videos, music or photos.
I'm now going to make a start on all of your suggestions. Got both laptops open side by side so I can keep track!
PS - there is a W10 update waiting but the problem is pre-existing. And I tried to download the update anyway, not enough room on the drive so I had to link up an external drive, still needed 4.?gb on SSD which is when I deleted Photoshop. I stopped the download as we've only got 2mb of broadband where we live and it was taking far too long. Plan is once the problem is sorted to take both laptops to the big city and do the upgrades there.0 -

That's part of the problem - what else is there? See my post above.0 -
have you run winsatdir https://windirstat.info/ and looked for huge files in the folders , something sticking out like 10g , havev you also done what I suggested and deleted all but the most recent windows backup/restore thing?
have you run the system clean and deleted temp file , and clicked on advance and cleaned system files
when those are done , return with the figure thenSave a Rachael

Fightsback wrote: »Also disable hibernation (suspend to disk) as it's not needed for a SSD as it will free as much room as your system RAM, eg if you have 4gb RAM this will free 4gb disk space and if you have 8gb RAM this will free 8gb of disk space, this removes the need for the hyberfil.sys file:
Reclaim SSD Space
You can also customise pagefile.sys to reclaim more disk space.
Couldn't switch off hibernation - in the command prompt I got a message saying not a recognised command.
Have done the pagefile thing, laptop now restarting though it's gone into running nine updates. :mad:0
