I would be much obliged for help with following issue please.

TalkTalk have just upgraded my speed from 38mb to 76mb foc

Connecting the laptop to the HG633 TalkTalk router gives me 75.3mb.
However, WiFi is only giving me between 38 and 40.
When I had 38mb I lost about 3mb using WiFi, but the loss on 76mb is appalling.

I've had the laptop at the side of the router and 15 feet away and there's no real difference.

Could this be a setting on the router or could the router be faulty. Unfortunately, I don't have another fibre router.

Thank you
Richard

That's because although your DSL connection has increased in speed you are still using the same wifi connection which has no bearing or relationship to your ADSL speed.

Although the HG633 is an AC router, I'm guessing that you probably don't have an AC wifi card in your laptop.

I'd be more inclined to think that your problem is the wifi card in the laptop rather than the router

  • I've also tried my smartphone and tablet to no avail.
  • Overcrowded channel maybe? If you want good speeds on Wifi you're going to have to invest in a decent router unfortunately.

There are apps you can download to check wifi signals and see how many overlap your channel.

I can pickup 8 routers all on channel 6. And a few others on channel 11 which seems to be the goto channel recommended by forums.

    All the others are free.

  • Been looking on the TalkTalk forums and there was a lot if comments about the poor performance of the HG633.

Just can't afford to go out and buy a different router.

I have an old d-link router but that was used for standard broadband.

Seems there's an upgrade on the Huawei HG633 firmware 1.15T to 1.16T but can't find it to try it out.

There's nothing you can't do on wifi with 35meg.

Do you have a pressing need for over 40Mbps when connected by wifi?

Use a cable when you have to have the full speed (I can't think of any reason why you would) and save yourself some money.

Agree with this, so from a DL point of view a lot of people would love to have this. Also breast in mind that your upload would have increased to 10mbps which is a huge jump from what you had

your new router will have the capabilities of 2.4ghz and 5ghz , but can your PC/mobile/tablet see the 5ghz?

go into the router settings and rename your ssid,s , mine are called TALKTALK24 and TALKTALK50 ,
now see if your equipment can see the 5ghz signal

if you cannot see the 5 ghz signal then you will have to update your equipment to utilise this .

do not expect your speed to be anywhere near the 70s , machines here with the latest AC cards and showing a connection speed of 433mbps still only get mid 50 connections
