Letter from Moorcroft Group

Hello,

I received a letter from Moorcroft Group Plc yesterday in my name and address as below
Dear Mr XXXX,
We are attempting to contact the above named person regarding a personal matter and we have been provided your address as a possible address for our customer.
if you are the person named above, please contact our office on ph xxxxx

however if you are not the person named above, it is also important that you contact us so that we can update our records accordingly.
i do not have any dealings with the above said company nor have any unpaid debt, i maintain a clean credit history (I do have loans and credit card which i pay regularly)

I moved to the current house in 2014. after that i have seen some letters addressed to the previous owner from moorcroft, which i have all ignored till now.

what worries me this time is they have addressed it to me, I have no idea where they got my name from, i tried calling them to check what the matter is and they were asking for personal details like DOB etc before telling me what it is regarding, I refused to give the details and cut the call.

should i be worried about anything?

thanks

Obtain copies of your credit report for free from Noddle and ClearScore and pay £2 for Experian to check that everything is ok, apart from that if you know you don't owe anything - bin the letter.

  • Thanks for the suggestion, i looked into my noddle report and i see a late payment marker from Orange in jan 16 on my previous address.

I had a contract phone with them for which the contract was over in sept 2015, and l moved my number to a pay as you go after that. and i always had a DD and never missed one payment.

not sure what to do now should i call orange and ask them?

They may have sold it to Moorcroft already although that would seem a bit quick - although hasn't Orange been called EE for quite some time now?

Give them a call but they may say they have closed the account and you need to deal with Moorcroft. If so just ring and pay them, they can then get the account closed.
  • I called orange/EE to ask them about it, they tell me that the last month i went over my allowance by about 400mins and the bill for that is £185. and they sent this bill to my old address. my fault i did not update my new address.

i do not know how i went above the limit on the last month of a 24 month contract. and it has cost me 185£... as i remember i had used my PAC code when it was about 2 weeks into the last month. I will check with my new provider on what date i moved and get back to EE.

i am worried about the late payment marker on my credit file as this is the first one i got. and is it going to stay for 6yrs now??

How did you get a late payment if a) you have a DD set up and b) you said you were on PAYG, meaning you top-up with credit hence no monthly bills?

A change of address wouldn't have made you miss a payment if you had a DD on the account.

Yes the late payment marker will remain for next 6 years.

I had always paid by DD, seems it is my last months bill which is 185, and i think i deleted my DD after the number was transferred, and this bill was generated after i cancelled my DD. I have asked them to send me the itemised bill to see what number i call for 185£ in nov

i cancelled my DD thinking they have already taken the last payment. an expensive lesson.

how much damage does it cause if i pay them what ever i owe them now. i am gutted seeing the red mark
  • Orange, like I am sure all of the providers do, charge in advance for line rental and in arrears for calls, which is why you received a bill after your contract ended. I know that this is of no use to you now, but may be for future reference.

Are you sure you only have 1 late payment marker given that you said you closed the account in Sept 2015? That's at least 4 months late payments (counting from Oct 2015 up to Jan 2016).

So was the letter from Moorcroft related to this EE debt then?

If it is, have EE given you a default?

If I were you I would be checking my Experian and Equifax reports ASAP.

Assuming you only have late payment markers on your account, clearing the balance owed before it goes any further just means that the account will be closed with a zero balance. The late payment marker(s) will remain for the next 6 years.

  • HI candyapple,

my contract ended in nov and i moved my number to the new provider on nov25th, and this marker was for the last month.
i will check with the other credit reporting agencies as you suggest.

will this one late payment affect the chances of me getting a loan next year, I was planning to do an home extension next year.

thanks for all the advice guys.

In post #3 you said your contract ended in Sept 2015. Which one is it - Sept or Nov 2015?

Yes it will affect your chances of getting a loan at the best rates, however after 12 months maybe not impact you so much.

You could always plead with EE to remove the late payment marker as a gesture of goodwill, can't hurt to try.
