Sneaky manner, what would the cashier gain from doing this? Seriously you make me laugh. Like I said in my earlier reply, any items needing to be paid that go out on the same day as a mixed deposit will be paid, or were you too quick to complain and didn't read that bit?

I'd like you to know that the service at the branch I work at has gone up by 5 points (using an independent service questionnaire) since I started working there. How do you know about the level of service I provide to customers without seeing it and experiencing it for yourself? I think you will find that I bend over backwards to help out any customer with any problem, but I will just not accept people coming onto public forums and having a dig at bank personnel for not informing them of something that the customer really should already know (its in the terms and conditions of the account) and that they only tell customers in the interest of exceptional service. However, if the OP had let the cashier know the situation (possibly rather than throwing the cash under the counter and grunting instructions, which does happen) then they will have most definitely offered the customer an alternative means of deposit as not to cause inconvenience.

Of course companies want to be told when they haven’t done something right. That’s why RBS/NatWest introduced the Concern and Queries system, where any level of complaint can be dealt with efficiently and in a proper manner, but if someone comes in kicking and screaming over what is a simply oversight (not mistake) then they are not going to go very far. I am sure the staff would have helped the OP out a lot more if he politely asked for an explanation and took whatever said to him as a viable one. The kicking and screaming should be reserved for people who have something real to complain about.

And finally the cash would show overnight and be backdated to the pervious working day, the OP have obviously exaggerated this as to get more replies on his topics. No way does the cash have to wait until the Cheque clears.

You seem very defensive considering i wasn't personal in any way.
It's great that you bend over backwards and that your branch has improved but that's a different story.

What annoyed you? The fact that I'd complain if i felt i was treated unfairly?
Check "oversight" in the dictionary - if my bank simply made an oversight i'd have no hestitation in letting them know.

No, what annoyed me was other people comment saying to change banks and the like. I see it every day all over very simple problems. If people took the time to be nice to bank staff they will find that most things can be sorted very easily.
I wasn't being personal, and I apologise if it felt that way, I was speaking in general (probably not in the best way, lol)
  • does this happen with many banks? I have often paid in cash and cheques together to the nationwide and the cash has always been available immediately. Is it because Nationwide is a building society or have I just been lucky?

    it's cool :)

My attitude is that everyone makes mistakes - banks, shops, garages etc and they're unavoidable, even if they are big ones and very annoying. However, everyone is entitled to correct their mistakes and i always give them a chance by re-using them or explaining the situation to them.
If they make further mistakes then i think it's time to use another bank, shop etc but if they apologise and correct their mistake and the service is otherwise good then i have no problems.

Everyone makes mistakes but you measure someone (or a company) by how they fix them.

just different banks use different systems
  • Bank Magic!!
On a saturday realised that there was a bill 2 clear, and was a few pounds short, went to the bank paid the money, only to realise later that the bill still did not get paid!!. Called in customer services, and was told that money paid in on a saturday will come into the account only on monday!! So if you have a bill 2 clear on Saturday, and if u are short of money, no matter what u do, the bank is going to charge you :(

Is natwest a black hole bank??

i always thought that bills due on the weekend were taken on the monday - or does that only apply to mortgage payments?

Why are you told not to tell people this?

I can't believe employees would be told to keep this to themselves, whatever happened to helping the customer and being honest?

(I'm not saying I don't believe you, just saying I don't believe it in general :))
Pretty obvious really-mutiply this x thousands each year=nice extra profit for them!

    An exception...

It's 9:30am and you remember that you've forgotten to pay a bill, but calculate that if you send it today then it'll arrive just in time. You then realise that you've no money in the account from which you want to pay the bill.

So, you trundle off to the bank to make a cash deposit before returning home to initiate the bill payment using online banking. On the way out of the door you remember that you've been waiting for an opportunity to pay in the small cheque you received for your birthday so take it with you.

You then pay both items into your account on the same slip (and unfortunately you are served by amandathepanda*), and return home...only to find that you can't make the bill payment because you haven't got enough cleared funds!

    * And I don't buy the "we'd have queues outside the door" argument either (sorry Amanda :)).

If you need to pay a bill and you have the cash in the house then you pay it into the bank to make a card payment. Some people work on a small budget and having access to their money is important even if the bank is busy.

I remember paying money into our account to pay the phone bill. It had to be paid that day or it was going to be cut off and I was using my Child Benefit from the Post Office to pay it as the wage was not coming in until 2 days later. Things were really tight.

I went into HBOS and the assistant in the queue told me to use the express cash. It was half past 2 and I explained that I needed the money in the account to pay the bill at 5pm. She told me it would be paid by close of business. Unfortunately what she did not know was that someone in the bank decided to leave all the express cash to be done in overtime that night.

I was so angry, but polite, at 6pm, that the customer services manager on the phone on telephone banking authorised a temporary £100 overdraft until it could be resolved the next morning. I had an Electron Card, basic bank account with no overdraft facility and I got to pay my bill. The next morning the money appeared and overdraft removed. I went into the bank and it was a case of what was the big deal. I was advised to put money in sooner in future and not expect transactions to be done immediately!

If they told me to wait a few days the steam would have been coming out my ears.
  • Hmm, Thats what i tought!!
Called the bank, they said iif there is a payment on a saturday, it will reflect in the account on the Friday. 'Am not sure, but i have seen couple of occassions where it did not show up on Friday, luckily had the money and they went ok!!. Can't prove it though :(
