Hold on, Natwest dont do real time banking do they? Wont the transaction appear overnight like the most of the rest of the banks?
I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. Real time banking with cash deposits and with transfers made between your own accounts (i.e. I have moved money from my esavings to my current account online and have then taken it out at a cashpoint within 5mins).

If you pay in cash it is instant. As a cashier we do not explain to everyone who pays in the difference between paying in cash and cheques,if we did the queues would be out of the door. If someone asked then I would.

Which bank would understaff its branches to the extent that they don't even have the time to warn their customers about potentially unfavourable consequences to their instructions?

I doubt that many Banks explain the differences every time a customer pays in.
And in my experience most banks understaff their branches, which isn't the fault of the people who work there

When I rang to query it, I was told that the cashier should have told me and the lady on the phone apologised for her not doing so.

How long would it take to say 'if this goes through as one transaction your cash won't be available straight away, so I can do 2 transactions if you would like me to?'

It doesn't even take 10 seconds to say that, so I don't buy the queues out of the doors thing.
Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...
  • They were probably just fobbing you off, we are not told to say this to customers.
I don't disagree with you, I am just giving you an honest explanation.

Why are you told not to tell people this?

I can't believe employees would be told to keep this to themselves, whatever happened to helping the customer and being honest?

(I'm not saying I don't believe you, just saying I don't believe it in general :))

  • Cash and cheques paid in together show overnight as Amanda has said. I am not too sure I want to comment further on staffing because it is not relevant to the question. You asked the quetion and received an answer and excuses about the why they didn't. That can only be answered by the cashier concerned. Pop into the branch concerned and ask her, if it is important to the discussion, about this case and I am sure she will apologise. The branch COULD have offered to reverse the entries off their system and put them through separately today IF the work had not been collected for processing prior to you calling the branch directly. They COULD have but DID NOT.
But at least you have posted it on this forum so that MSE visitors can see it.
I have not worked for NatWest Bank since February 2009
