Poor PN - it must be to do with the pitch of it.
A while back I took DGS to the park with his football, and he started bouncing it along the pavement. He was astonished when I made him stop - he seemed genuinely not to hear the annoying Doing! Doing! Doing!
I certainly hear the building work across the road. I'll be so glad when they finish, and go away with all their vans and trucks and cars (one is particularly annoying as it "chirrups" whenever anyone happens to go near it )
ETA OK, I've finished moaning now.0 -

Massive fail from me!
Got both answers wrong.
I thought I was on the right track with the first one, but obviously not!
And I couldn't see how to use pi in the second one.
But then I'm a maths dunce, barely scraping an 'O' level in it!
And now I want some PIE!
I got the first one right, for the right reason. I got the right answer to the second one too, for the reason that GDB mentions, but now that I've read the answer on the website, I'm not so sure that the reason GDB and I came up with was right. The infection can get into a previously empty row if there is infection on either side of that row. So I think you probably need the answer given by the Grauniad to give a really valid reason for the answer, even though our reason suggests the answer that is right.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

First one the ratio of the area of a square to the area of the circle it comtains must always be the same regardless of the size of the square so splitting the big square into smaller ones won't change the ratio.
Second one, clearly it is not possible to move to a new row or column that does not yet have an infected node in that rows or in the rows on both sides of it.I think....0 -
I am not a follower of Who was Jack the Ripper - but this latest theory's piqued my interest.
In short: A bloke was doing his family history and there's always been a rumour in the family that his last victim was his great-aunt. The last victim was Mary Ann Kelly - a prostitute - but her real identity was never known.
He looked into this family rumour and he thought it could be true - he even obtained Court permission to dig up the body and have it DNA tested against his DNA. Unfortunately, when they looked into doing this it appears that the grave was a communal/pauper one and the time/cost of tracing and contacting all other interested parties in all the other graves they'd have to dig up to find her body is deemed too hard/too much. Additionally, the grave space was dug over again in 1940.
Author Wynne Weston-Davies' great aunt, Elizabeth Weston Davies married in late 1884. She left him soon after and her husband quickly divorced her - the great-nephew found handwritten divorce proceedings papers. More paperwork shows that the ex-husband spent a LOT of time using private detectives to find her and hunt her down. He was also a failed medical student. He also spent a lot of time deep in the Ripper enquiry people, reporting on proceedings etc.
This great-nephew's theory is that the husband was unstable and started a vendetta against her and all the other Ripper victims were him just murdering other prostitutes to cover up his intended victim's murder.
Mary Ann Kelly had her heart cut out, her breasts cut off and her face so badly damaged she was unrecognisable.
So, another day, another "Was HE the Ripper...?" but this one's got an entirely different reason/angle.
The husband, in the end, committed suicide in 1903 by cutting his throat - which is how the Ripper victims were killed.0 -
Pi was 'invented' by the Welshman William Jones (1674-1749)
"It is thought that he chose π (pi) either because it is first letter of the word for periphery (περιφέρεια) or because it is the first letter of the word for perimeter (περίμετρος). (Or because of both)."(I just lurve spiders!)

It's a shame jelly isn't here, he'd have an informed opinion on the ripper story. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

Talking of jelly reminds me of when I was a child, watching American kids' programmes, and hearing them talking about peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
I couldn't understand how the jelly didn't just slide out of the sandwich.
(Plus, it sounded revolting!)
'Twas my first experience of the great English divide.
(Mind you, peanut butter and jam sounds pretty revolting, too).(I just lurve spiders!)

You are right, once again! I Got as far as thinking that, with only 9 counters to start with on a 10x10 board, there's bound to be an empty row somewhere, but that's not a proof. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0
