I'm on the Roobois. Watching This Week. Liz Kendall is on.... I have a bit of a 'shouldn't but would' crush on her.

Had an assessment this morning for a job, should hear tomorrow morning if I have a second interview on Monday. I'd be very surprised and disappointed if I didn't pass the assessment as it was really quite straightforward. We shall see.

Good luck, Mas. Let us know how it goes when you hear. :)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Did anyone watch the new "Roots"?

If so, what did you think of it?

Did you watch the original series in 1977? (I was surprised it was that long ago!)

Edit..... I've only just realised that the guy who played the young Kunta Kinte in the 1977 series is Levar Burton, who was Geordi Laforge in 'Star Trek- The Next Generation'!

I didn't recognise him without his visor! :rotfl:

I watched the 1977 version. It made such an impact that I can still recall scenes, even though I was a teenager and took in little tv at the time. It inspired me to read the book. It was the first book I'd ever read by a black author. After that, I read many others and it spawned my interest in Maya Angelou and Alice Walker. Even though there were other horrid acts at the time, such as apartheid, it was what made me aware of racism on the grounds of colour.

I probably won't watch the new version as it can't possibly have the same impact, so no matter how good it is, it won't match up.

I must admit, I did think it was good.

There were minor differences in bits of the plot, cf the original series, but none that mattered, so far anyway.

Interesting, though, that as each scene played out, I started to see the same incidents being played out from the original series in my mind's eye!
It must have made a big impression on me too, for that to happen!

It caused a little bit of mental confusion, I must admit! Maybe that'll ease as the new version gets going.

The actors who both played Fiddler couldn't have been more different, though!

One or other of the series should be compulsory viewing in schools, IMO.
Along with the series about the Holocaust, which interestingly was the year after the original Roots series.

    Am I allowed to say?:

The bit about the press gang is fascinating. Could you post that separately, perhaps? Also, how come the gravestone looks so new?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

    Yes it is.

I don't know. Must be the stone used I guess. Portland stone, quarry right next door.

In short the press gang were given the OK to go and grab some random sailors - but they turned up somewhere where press gangs were not allowed to operate.

Upon landing the constable asked what they wanted - and the Captain said "Here, paperwork - press gang, we're taking your seamen". The Constable said "Oh no you're not" - by which time a crowd had seen them arriving and all gathered... and, of course, armed themselves.

The Captain's men grabbed their first man - and it all kicked off.

The Captain accidentally let off his gun, at the ground - but the mob fired. A local was also firing from a window of a house.

All hell broke loose. 3 shot dead.

I need to find out more, but that's the gist of it.

The Captain and his men were arrested and went before the Court - but charges were dismissed.
