Instead of sitting here alternately refreshing this thread and a forum on another site that I frequent, I really should go and do some marking. Today's pile is 18 papers with 120 marks' worth of questions on each. That's 2160 marks to do before the next pile (only 1080 marks) comes in on Friday. All need marking, adding up and entering onto the master spreadsheet before 9am Monday morning. So far I have done 18*35=630 marks. There's a charity quiz night on at work on Friday evening, just to add to the marking deadline. Any NP who feel up to posting a few brief encouragements will be much appreciated. :)

Bung me some of the papers and I'll mark them.

Thanks. It's GCSE Physics mock exam.

Had to go down and unload the Mr T delivery, but have now done another 18*4=72 marks. That's 702 now.

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

The secret to teaching is to teach a subject that has no homework possible and that has no extra-curricular activities.

Typing was like that. Can't set homework as nobody has a typewriter at home. No events/other that is done. Go in, teach, mark as you're going as you say "Turn to page 90 and type that" then mark it as each finishes it....

There must be other subjects that fit that brief.

    Needlework ..?

I once worked with an egyptologist - who was doing some IT work as there's a shortage of jobs for egyptologists in the middle of East Anglia. A couple of years later I was watching the telly and there she was, with her husband, in Egypt, on a dig.

Can't remember her name ... it was a bit of a funny one, but English. After 40 you start to lose your marbles you know.

Edit: Found her. You don't need a memory while you can remember enough bits to be able to Google it.

These days I don't think anyone teaches typing any more. People who want to learn to type learn from software, in their own time. It's all so much easier now that what you type can be edited before you print it.

Needlework is now called textiles and involves creating a portfolio complete with sketches and ideas and influences, which is an absolute nightmare to mark.

Physics is about as good as any. At least I don't have to mark essays, and although we have what I call "explainy" questions, which are more annoying to mark than calculations, at least all our marking is "answer in the spaces on the question paper", which is much quicker than "answer on file paper so the marker has to hunt for each answer amongst your chaotic working" as maths teachers have to mark.

The things I really really hated marking were internally assessed practical coursework, which has gone from A-level in the latest round of education reforms. They do have core practicals, and you have to have paperwork to show that they've developed the required skills over the 2 years of the course, but it's unimaginably less ambiguous and irritating than it used to be. :)

I was tempted to learn to type using the Mavis Beacon software but didn't get round to it. I really should as I'm a clumsy typist.
Now coursework is disappearing, I don't think any teachers will miss it. Also I don't have have to mark anything like essays (I think only one A level board still involves essays).

My husband learned to touch type and subsequently typed up his PhD thanks to Mavis Beacon. Lifesaver.

Pastures, I read that as you once knew an eggplantogist. Time to sleep methinks.
