But without the US model of people being able to work and take their degree in classes in the evenings!

We've got the OU for some stuff - and London's got a few evening courses no doubt, but it's not the norm or common for people to have access to that. For many, going to evening classes, would work much better. Lone/OU stuff's very isolating - and expensive. I stopped doing it some years back when I was changing jobs too much and I couldn't afford the courses.

There's less and less funding for this. I think the education system's being treated as the piggy bank of the nation to be hammered to release the cash that's holding the rest of the economy back.

We could have saved a fortune by keeping polytechnics, expanding the OU massively, not cutting night school, and avoid endlessly tinkering, tinkering and tinkering again with education.

    Rant over.:(

Several employees of mine are doing/have done degrees through the OU whilst working, and IMO it's something that we need to massively support.

Seems that the government doesn't agree with it though.

If you don't need a qualification at the end, I'd argue that providing you have access to the internet, it's never been easier to learn about something.

There's an endless array of excellent MOOCs from the world's leading universities, plenty of free tutorials (eg gcflearnfree for IT problems), and then a huge number of out of copyright texts on archive.org and Project Gutenberg.

This taps in to what Gen mentioned earlier about not getting paid for what's on the net. The model is changing.

I do agree that there has been too much tinkering, but I don't think the system could have stayed the same. Tinkering with the OU is definitely not a good idea when it can be used to deliver bulk, quality learning, and do so cheaply.

Is dull cool and drizzly more disappointing when the weather forecast was (and still is) for warm sunshine? I wonder how far W I would have to go to find the promised sun?

I am so glad you said that michaels. It's not nice here either, and I've been thinking of late that you've been in a different climatic zone.

Travel to South Herts for cloud and wind. The sun is trying to put in an appearance, but the clouds are winning.

I got out and mowed the lawn before it can turn to rain here. Weather looks lousy and dull.
