Talking of cigarettes there was a huge variety in the 60`s and 70`s. Bluebook, 2 Egyptian, 2 Turkish, 2 Havana, 2 Virginian and 2 of something else. I smoked Pall Mall plain. They were made in the USA and were king size. A carton a week for £5. The shop I bought them from had an elderly Irish lady serving and every time I bought a carton she would say, " That`s a dear old smoke "

When I quit, e cigs for fags, 7 years ago, all the cigs in the UK were all foul tasting cheapo tobacco tipped rubbish.

Well, that's the last length of lawn edging gone in, plus another half-dozen rose bushes. I didn't completely strip the bed out that they've gone in - I left a couple of clumps of bluebells coz I like them and they tell me spring has really sprung.

Twas a nice drive up to Ambleside to get the bits, it's turned out really nice today. High cloud base and maybe 95% cover above the fells but it was that nice fluffy sort of cloud with thin gaps to let the light through, gorgeous.

Didn't stop when I got home, I carried on up to the end of the road to see what the prison shop had in. Came back with three trays of bedding plants (Gawd knows what but they were only a fiver each and it goes to the rehabilitation charity that works with the inmates, or those who aren't doped up to the eyeballs :D at least) and a pack of bacon from the smokehouse they also operate inside the wire. I've heard good reports of that so thought I'd give it a try.

The bedding plants are now planted, well, stuffed into the ground LOL. I think I'll get some more tomorrow and make use of the long plant trays at the side of the patio instead of just using them to cultivate weeds.

Also, having completed the lawn edging I've scattered some soil and grass seed where the old edge was sloping down into the flower bed, to try and level it up a bit since the log roll edging I've put in emphasises the drop in that corner.

The important question is, of course, should I take bets on how long it is before it all dies following my amateur efforts? :rotfl:

That's not a sentence (hahahahahaha) I've heard before!

Ambleside........I was thinking that was a monastery! Maybe I'm thinking of Ampleforth? :D (Will have to go a-googling!)
Still, I suppose a prison is a sort of monastery, isn't it? :D
A monastery for the Dark Side! :rotfl:

I don't even know where Barbados is ... but I know I'll never go there.
    Never say never, PN! :)
Have a look on Google Earth!
Does anybody else remember some "almost-singing-like" catchphrase: "Have a banana"? I just ate a banana and thought of it, then I wondered where I'd got it from .... (some people have too much time on their hands).
    Yes!
    "Whoops! Have a banana!"
Don't know where it originated though. Hang on a mo............

Here's an opportunity for our little Scottish guzzler to buy into his own distillery.

I'll wait for my local one to start selling their output - only another couple of years maturing left.

.........it's from an old music hall song called "Let's all go down the Strand".

Couldn't find a decent performance of it to post her.

HMP Haverigg works with a rehabilitation charity, who operate a shop just outside the main gate selling the stuff that the inmates have made or (legally) grown. They do all sorts of garden buildings and furniture, the aforementioned smokehouse and, depending on time of year, plants and veg.

Definitely not - it's the central town in the Lake District.

It does have a church though, coincidentally designed by an ancestor of mine - but that wouldn't be hard, he designed all sorts of things, including the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras and the Albert Memorial. His grandson was responsible for things such as Battersea Power Station, Waterloo Bridge and the red phone boxes.

    Yes, was thinking of Ampleforth.

"Ampleforth Abbey is a monastery of Benedictine Monks a mile to the east of Ampleforth, North Yorkshire, England, part of the English Benedictine Congregation."

I think they've made some Recordings of Gregorian Chant.

    Edit. Yes they have.

Gotta get some more of that bacon too - that was some of the best I've tasted.

Must be all the spice they have in the prison :( Very frightening conversation at work today but I probably shouldn't tell.

When I was a smoker there used to be hundreds of brands of cigarettes I'm not sure exist any more (in the sense of in the UK). Numbies (No 6 or No 10), Woodbine, plus imports like Sobranie Black. You could get menthol cigarettes and charcoal filtered ones.

Glad I quit, got to say.

Tonight's looking unpleasant; the heavens have opened and thunder and lightning are in full display. Now got to figure out how top take the dog for his evening necessities when he's terrified of the storm. :(
