I paid Halfords £10 to fit the battery on my old car. Worth every penny. They are pretty good for small jobs. I get them to change my car lightbulbs too. DH despairs at me and says I ought to be able to do this myself, but why when I can drive it to someone who will do it better, quicker, and for a tenner or less.

Just paid MINI to replace a light over my registration plate and new windscreen wipers. They cleaned the car properly inside and out, even with shiny tyre black for free.

    Well worth the extra.

Lots of the risk seems to come from things we are deliberately bringing into our homes such as spray deodorants and air-fresheners (and no doubt the fabric conditioners and everything else that these days seems to have 'continuous fragrance'. Still there is no chance of DW listening to this as she hasn't for the last few years I have been banging on about such things making my hay fever worse.

Oh my! Those things are terrible. My friends have them and they set me off streaming every time. I suffer mildly with hayfever but those things are evil. Is your wife trying to kill you?

I don't like the smells either, it's so synthetic. I'll stretch to a can of Odour neutraliser for emergencies only.

I'm sure I told you all about the time I went to the MINI garage thinking there was a faulty connecting with the passenger airbag... day before a Christmas eve spent waiting in the garage (no one realised it would all take so long) and over 500 squid later :( But at least I got the car cleaner for free, a free replacement wiper blade (fitted) and a cuddly toy for keeping me waiting so long (roll eye smiley). Bargain.

When we had the 5 series, the dealer always used to make sure the car came back properly valeted.

I assumed it was because it was a reasonably new top end one, but it's good to know that they appear to do it for all customers.

Although with it being used as the main non-business car, it was a complete mess inside most the time, so it saved me a job.

Well done to youngest and to you too Sue.

No prizes for guessing we have a woodburner. Our logs are celebrating there third year in our wood shed, well seasoned and burn well.

It was ony 12 years ago we had a wood fuelled boiler/cooker. Our neighbours still do.

Lovely smell of woodsmoke, no sprays here, although we do have reed diffusers and candles too. Mostly though our hall has smelt of damp dog and horsey coats . If you make it as far as the kitchen it smells of whatever is on top of the stove ( could be singed washing!)or out of the oven. Upstairs in the morning the landing smells of the overnight litter tray that is our little cats ensuite.

Hate sprays, plug ins and those things in plastic containers that old people have in their loos.

I didn't mean it like that Doozer.

I actually quite like the Mini, and would possibly consider one now there's a proper 5 door. The only issue for me is the pricing new paired with the specifications, which is where other cars become far better value for money. This is much more noticable with leasing.

Just priced one up, and for the same terms (2 year/100k miles) and roughly the same spec as my car, the lease is £42 more. I'd take a good guess that for lower mileages, they can actually work out good value, though.

Yeah, but they decided the whole thing needed replacing not just a sensor. And yet found a bonus (for them) other fault. They might have thought I'd love the soft toy because it being just before Christmas, Toy Story or Finding Nemo or similar that I love was on TV (and I was completely bored sat there all day). I was too tired and fed up to tell them a cuddly dog hadn't exactly made my day.

There are a couple of garages across the road from me. Last Monday I popped into one to ask them to top up the oil (I'm a bit nervous about doing it myself). I didn't get charged :) That's a much more useful gift!

Without wishing to sound too grumpy, Old Pa Generali spent 10 years dying of Alzheimer's and I reckon dear Old Ma Generali got a phone call or an email most months putting her attention towards a cure.

Old Pa Generali has been cremated and a tree is growing very well on him and has been for the best part of another decade and still we have no cure and no real drug to ameliorate the symptoms apart from a couple of chemical coshes to try to stop patients getting violent.

One day I am sure we will cure Alzheimer's and other sorts of dementia. I can guarantee that year won't be 201x and in about 2 years I'll be able to be fairly sure that it won't be 202x too.

Proof of concept on an animal is at the very, very minimum $1,000,000,000 and a decade away from a marketable drug.

My fil did too. With hindsight, the extent to which we didn't realise it was happening was quite scary. The outcome would have been the same, but if we could have realised and got help earlier it would have been so much better for everyone.

I'd love to see a cure for alzheimers. My fear is that becaue it involves the brain, which is the organ which humans are least advanced in working on, that it is further down the line than we think. I'd love to be wrong, but not convinced I will be.
