When I used to work in deepest Surrey I drove past a shop that did nothing but trophy cups.

In the sense that you went to them and they sold them to you engraved them with what you wanted.

Clearly there's a big enough market for things like that. And presumably most population centres must have similar.

We have not one but two shops that sell trophy cups (plus other awards)..must be all the Sunday football teams giving them business.

I won a cup once, nursing cadet of the year at St John ambulance, can't remember what I did to get it but I do remember fumbling with receiving the cup as I had to do a handshake with the 'wrong' hand for me because you had to use a certain hand to shake, very awkward when you are left handed.

Last day at college for Joe tomorrow, out of his entire year group he is the only student to complete every single task over the 18 units. All bar him left the last Distinction task as it was quite involved and took a long time when time was running out.

His record for the two year course? 18 units completed, all at Distinction level. Not bad for someone who had an aspirational target of Distinction, Merit, Merit (if all confirmed he will receive Distinction*, Distinction*, Distinction*). One of his tutors said today that he completely underestimated him and his determination and stubborness.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

I wonder what happens to old cups.... when Clubs have cups and they stop being awarded. The cup was "invented" by somebody who arrived and became the leading force in the club (took them from bottom of the league to the top), but he wasn't from the UK and found it too cold, so he returned to his homeland after 3 years.

Since then, the two town clubs have merged. I wonder if there's a dusty box in a cupboard somewhere of old cups... or if they just get binned.

Is there an old cup graveyard, I wonder? :D

I suppose it depends what they're made of. If silver, obvious. If silver-plate, hmm. If the cup isn't itself engraved, just a plaque in the wooden plinth, then there would be a market for it, but if engraved with some random bod's name, not really.

I guess they'd end up in the metal skip at the tip.

What's interesting, though, is how a 'cup' came to be the high prize anyway!
Did it stem from mediaeval times, when ordinary folk had wooden cups, and so to get a prize of even a metal cup, let alone a silver one, would be a prize indeed? I mean a cup that could actually use, to drink your mead out of!
Then it evolved into the two-handled style?

    Big market in cups?
I guess so. As you say, football clubs, other sports clubs, most schools, Drama, music associations, , local arts festivals/competitions.........I bet most largish towns have some sort of the latter.
There are a lorra lorra cups out there! :D

Well done to Joe too! :T :T

Determined is very much the word for Joe :rotfl:. After the eekness of GCSE results day, he put his determined head on and just went for it, partly to prove to his old high school and partly because he knew he had to do that if he wanted to follow his dream.

I think that was what was seen by the powers that be for college, by rights they should never have accepted him (it is a very challenging college to get into due to its high ranking and is over subscribed several times over each year - they only take the best) but as one said to me, there was just something about him that they couldn't turn him down. He obviously didn't meet their entry criteria due to his GCSE results and specialist needs but they did everything they could to shoe horn him into a level 2 course to get him the results needed for level 3.

I'm just so grateful that someone on the admittance team saw that potential, I dread to think what would have happened otherwise.

Father and daughter who beat neighbour to death for bursting football that came over the fence are both jailed for seven years

    In the news today.

Best just put up with the 'Doofing' Pastures!

Cripes! I didn't hear about that! :(

    Who'd have neighbours, eh?

I'm lucky with mine. At the moment, touch wood. No screaming kids. In the past there were some next door, but they were ok, and some next door but one who doofed a bit in their own garden, but it was bearable. The squeak from the trampoline was ok, too!

The two across the road who used to play footie in the street, at least I knew them and could wag a finger if I was worried about my car....they've grown up now and live elsewhere.

    I'm keeping my fingers well-crossed.

Mind you, adults could be just as bad, but so far, no desperately loud music-players nor constant beery garden party types, nor major parking conflicts.

I'm now terrifiedly worrying about when my bubble will burst!

Yesterday I was in the garden and heard peals of gleeful giggles from the little boy 2 houses along who was playing in his paddling pool. Such a happy sound, it made me smile :):):)

Sue Huge WELL DONE to Joe :T , as well as to the college for realising his potential!

Pyxis That's lovely news, so pleased for you and your ensemble

I had this grand plan of installing a watering system for the bedding plants.

I installed a hose about a foot off the soil to my wooden panel fence, which I punctured with small holes facing the direction of the plants and it worked well but over the years I stopped bothering to use it.

I quite enjoy watering the plants each evening after work with a hand held hose.
