Sticky ice cream papers don't go in the recycling bin, they go in the rubbish bin.

We put all paper in the recycling bin, and feel ever so slightly smug about having so much stuff to recycle. I had no idea we are doing it wrongly.

I also insist on putting cans and jars in without rinsing them, as it seems wrong to use carefully purified water to rinse scrap cans. I expect that's wrong too.

I'd still be delighted that the kids were putting their wrappers in the bin, even if it was the wrong one.

And I pick up the mutt's poos, tie the bag shut, and stick it in the nearest bin. So, I'm wrong about that, too. I really don't feel that it's wrong to do that with a bin that belongs to the council and is emptied by the council.

What I can't understand is the people who bag it up and then leave the bag lying around. Sometimes, tied to a branch.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Nearly got stiffed for a bluey in A1di. Luckily I was on the ball!

Spent under £3, handed over a £10 and got just over £2 back, so I said "I gave you a tenner" and she opened the till, had a look and handed a fiver over.

Good job I do keep an eye on things!

When they opened a lot of staff left L1dl to go and work there and everybody looked happy in their jobs. Recently they look really glum.

Contaminated paper shouldn't go in recycling. Some types of paper can't go in, but it varies from area to area. For example, waxed paper can't go in mine.

Also, if cans and bottles aren't swilled out, they, too, can contaminate a load and cause it to be sent to landfill.

They don't have to be squeaky clean, just rinsed out so that most of the debris goes.

There's a whole thread about this in DT..... can't remember if you've seen it?

I don't agree that any bin is ok as long as it's a bin. (Viz. my remarks about the doggy-doo in previous post).

I was told by my council that the bins were mine, not theirs.
And if someone's deposit stops my bin being emptied because of contamination, and I then have to grovel about finding and removing the contaminant, I don't think that is ok, really.

Maybe there's a product opportunity, something that straps inside your bin on a timer .... "before 6am, if this lid is lifted, squirt the liquid in the tank at the gap" ..... except then whoever was doing it would probably set fire to the bin, or smash it to pieces - AND - shove their dog poo through your letterbox.

You can't win when it comes to trying to outsmart wuckfits.

All I can say is, God help us if we ever have to start paying for refuse collection by individual weight of the rubbish.

I predict an increase in the murder rate if that were to happen.

It won't be long before you simply order a driverless delivery pod and it turns up, you pop your rubbish in it when you want and off it goes.... no more bin days, bin men, bins to worry about .... then you'll be charged by weight probably... or a confusing combination of time of day, fixed charge and weight of rubbish.

    :)

Or better still, individual refuse-to-energy converters, which will power your house, and anything surplus can be sold to the National Grid. :)

That'd never work. Many don't have the space, they'd be run under some "Govt Scheme" meaning that dodgy business people would set up companies to build/supply them, then trouser the cash before going bankrupt having squirrelled the cash away.

The wealthy who had the space/cash to pay for them would find theirs was fitted poorly/out of warranty and need a new one to be able to sell their house .... and the poor, who had no space/money for them would face ever increased rubbish collection charges just because they're a captive audience.

Lots of leaflets will have been produced about The Scheme and faceless highly paid bureaucrat will have been employed in the offices/departments to oversee the "Initiative"... then the Govt would change and some new way to con/stiff everybody would be discovered.

I was thinking of the stage when they would be like household boilers!

Mind you, by then, there probably wouldn't be much, if any 'refuse', as a wholly biodegradable plastic substitute would have been developed by then, so everything would be compostable or recyclable.

That only leaves........... individual sewage-to-energy converters! :)

LOL - shouldn't laugh really .... Can't Pay, We'll Take it Away - a tenant eviction.... nobody answered the door, the LL's agent turned up ... they got into the house and it was a room (HMO). Knocked, nothing, so they kicked the door in and the agent said "Hello Nick!" ... there were two blokes in there - they asked why didn't you answer the door ... the tenant's deaf.

So now they're evicting some furren deaf bloke. That'll take some translating/time to sort out!

Ah, £7k rent arrears. One completely deaf fella - and his nephew who doesn't really understand English - and one signs only in Spanish. It's a bit difficult to follow really.

Furrener shows him a letter about housing benefit; tenant says he had no idea there was a shortfall. Instead of turfing them out on the streets, the high court bloke intervened and phoned the Council to try to get them a bed for the night due to his disabilities. He then took them to the Council office where he had to be.
