    You don't need a receipt but you do need proof of purchase. This could be a receipt, bank statement or even (theoretically) an eye witness.

    However in reality, I'd be very surprised if any retailer would accept an eyewitness. Sometimes though, if you can narrow down the details by providing day of the week & month or specific date, along with a rough idea of time and price paid, they'll either check their merchant copy of the receipts or see if it matches the price it was being sold on their database. Theres really no requirement for them to do this though so its best to be extra polite when asking them this.

    If they refuse, perhaps appeal on social media or to their head office and ask if they can suggest anything.
