How much was wasted, people here the word free and often take far more than they can eat, hence why someone serving often works best and tell any fatties to come back for seconds if there is any spare food left over.

Seen it with my own eyes, like a stampede they load up plates, some more than one plate, eat a quarter of it and leave the rest, well its free !

Never seen that at any funeral I have been to.

How many people are thinking straight when they are grieving?

Perhaps they have no experience of catering for such a large number and put their trust in the experience of the caterers.
Grief or not, I think most people would ask what they're going to get for their money, even if it's simply to make sure their "guests" are taken care of.

I've seen it many a time, especially when there's some free booze thrown in unfortunately.

Have you ever had to arrange a funeral for a close relative?

Yes...and one of the most important things was to make sure everyone was suitably catered for so that the day was at least remembered in the best light possible given the circumstances.

    Have you?

I see you edited your first reply.

Anyway, which is what the Op thought they were doing and put their trust in the caterers to deliver this.

Imagine... at her buffet the guests would be restricted to just one quarter of a sandwich, a mini sausage roll, samosa & spring roll (gone in one bite) a chicken drumstick and half a spoon each of potato and tomato salads. Barely enough for a two-year old to snack on and they charged over £9 a head for that!

When you put it like that it does seem very little for what was charged for what is probably a lunchtime buffet. I had a look at Brakes who seem to be a leading food supplier for the catering industry and there sugguested menu for 20 people if multiplied by five seems to sugguest OP was not provided with enough food for 100 people.

I wanted to clarify my reply, no harm in that.

My point is they could have easily have clarified this with a simple question before agreeing to the contract, not after.

And for the record I don't disagree the OP seems to have paid too much for what they were expecting I'm just trying to give a clear, unemotional take on what the position could be. It'll be up to the OP to take it further but I fear that may not get anywhere with this, and personally I'd probably have more important things to think about right now.
