Mark, it wasn't even 50 rounds according to the way you calculate rounds as a chef, as OP says they had a quarter of a sandwich per person, so 25 sandwiches for 100 people!

Actually I think it was, 12.5 sandwiches (50 quarter sandwiches). Perhaps I am wrong - in any event it was a pitiful amount.

Do you know any wedding caterer that would supply a price without saying what they were providing for that price?

In my experience they will either ask what price you are looking to pay and then specify what they will provide for that price, or alternatively show you various options with each showing both the price per head and what would be provided.

I cannot imagine a caterer just giving a price with no details of what was being provided.
And if they didn't you would certainly want to ask, would you not!

Whether this poor person paid £1 a head or £20 a head is irrelevant. The amount of food provided was woefully inadequate for 100 people. This club should be named & shamed within its own locality and a reduction of bill as a good gesture move.
    I agree with this.

Yet there seems to be quite a few posters seeing the blame as being more with the op rather than the golf club.
Nobody's "blaming" the OP and for the record I don't think anyone, least of all me, has said they got a fair deal. But there's a difference as to what they could expect legally and what the golf club should do as a matter of goodwill.

So if the op withheld part of the payment and the golf club took them to court how do you think the court would settle the matter?

Thank you all for your replies. I have had trouble logging in so am using a slightly different user name until I can get some help from admin.

We did have a discussion about the food when we booked it, as there was an allergy issue to bring to their attention. We felt that £1250 for the day (venue & catering) although was a hefty amount, it was for 100 people, and we expected for a proffessional establishment that they would provide suitable catering based on their skill and experience of dealing with occassions such as ours. Regardless of how many people eventually attended, we do not feel that the amount of food provided was enough for 100 people.
One mini sausage roll, one mini samosa, one spring roll, one piece of chicken and an eith of a square of sandwich per plate is what they provided (plus potato salad which was left because it was a finger buffet). for the £940 for food this meant they charged £9.40 for that plate of food approx £1.88 each item for a sausage roll etc.
We have complained to the Town council who have invoiced us (obviously some sort of franchise set up) who have now not even followed their own complaints procedure, and dismissed us with total indifference.
In response to others, there was a bar there, no free drinks, and no, it was not a rowdy gathering.

Really confused you've only mentioned the council now.
You need to tell them you wish to escalate the complaint or whatever their complaints procedure says you do next.
Also, speak with your local councillor?

Perhaps it's a municipal golf club.

I didnt think it was that important initially. we took it to the local council. initially we were not informed it was anything to do with them, until we were ignored by the caterers, only then did we discover a link with the town council. The Town clerk has wiped his hands of it without correctly referring us to their correct procedures (or appeal process etc) and I think we should now be writing to the Mayor. Its been brick wall after brick wall. I am pleased that so many people are in agreement that the amounts provided are way short of what you would reasonably expect. I dont think we are going to get anywhere though.

To be honest, if i went to a funeral and i didn't get any food i wouldn't complain. I can see why the OP feels ripped off but if it were me, i would just leave it and move on. It can't be changed now and is it really worth the fight ? Most funerals i've been to there is just a very light buffet and cup of tea/soft drink. The last two i've been to i didn't eat a thing, just had a drink.
