dont want to use food caddy

didnt know where to put this post.

I do not use the food caddy for recycling every 2 weeks, I recycle everything else.

I tried it at first, it stinks and was going mouldy, as a bag took a week or so to fill, as we do not waste much food (always hated throwing food away) kids have to eat everything on plate etc. I do not want to put it outside and go in and out for 1 piece of apple core. I just want to throw it in the bin or sometimes I put some in the compost. It decomposes anyway, so it can go in landfill.

I keep getting leaflets from the bin man about the food caddy.

will I be forced to use it?

will my general bins be checked for food waste?

It would be useful to know which local authority is responsible for your waste collections, as some are a lot harsher than others.
  • Can you not compost all of it as you do with some? No food waste in your bin then.

You cannot be forced to use it, but you may be either fined, or have your waste colletions stopped if you don't.

Yes your bins may be checked if the council suspect you are not recycling as required by law.

Why not get a 2nd small caddy, or clean and recycle a (free) container from the supermarket (eg the plastic tray meat comes in)? Put your apple core etc in that, and at the end of the day, or next morning, empty it into the caddy outside.

    It's not hard.

In fact why make an extra journey - just empty it into the caddy outside each time you go out to the pub/work/college/wherever you go?

This is true - we very rarely put out our green bin (garden waste) because we compost everything. We've never had any communications about us not using it.
  • Hi,

just put it out empty on a windy day and it will blow away, gone.

Put it out empty with a note for the bin men saying that your household doesn't waste food. :)

It varies so much, where we are there are no food caddies, food waste is supposed to go in the garden waste bin, but that is only collected during the summer. In the winter, it all goes in the general waste bin. They are quite relaxed about things too, such as taking extra bags away when bins are full.

Our neighbouring local authority however do have food caddies, and residents there are forced to segregate waste into THIRTEEN different selections, and they are very very strict on what they will take!

We find this when we rent self-catering holiday accommodation. I don't think we've ever had two places where the arrangements are exactly the same.

I don't use the council supplied caddy. I bought a 'pretty' one with a carbon filter in the top. No smells ...
