Well done getting a match! hope it all goes to plan from here. Some of the training away is a bit intense, don't be worried about it. No one expects it to go perfectly and getting wound up about having the perfect training week is exactly how to spoil your training week.

  • Really pleased that it's happening at last Nanny. Looking forward to hearing more about Jazzy and your future adventures together! Su
  • I've always taught my children never to approach any dog without permission. For most dogs, it's because we don't know how they will react. With Guide Dogs, it's because they are working. So we always ask the owner if we can stroke a dog or not. My son (who has Down's Syndrome) gets very excited when he sees a Guide Dog and tells me that they are busy working!

You are quite right of course, however in my defence, I used to belong to a community choir which met at the local resource centre for the blind and we had several blind members with Guide Dogs. I have belonged to a number of choirs down the years, and it's the only choir I was in where at any one time there could be up to 4 dogs attending as well! So the dogs were 'off-duty' at the time.

Once, during a break in rehearsal, I was chatting to a man with a guide dog (not one of the choir, just there to use the resource centre). He'd said something to me which I didn't catch properly as I wasn't facing him at the time, and I had to explain I needed to lipread. "Oh" he said cheerfully, "I used to be quite good at that" gesturing at his hearing aids "until I went blind!". Talk about counting your blessings!

A close friend of mine got a guide dog almost 2 years ago now. A little boy called Jasper. It has changed her life. It took some time to get use to walking with an assistance dog, she lost a lot of confidence when she lost her sight. Now she tells me going ahead and getting the dog, and doing the training has in fact saved her life. I certainly see someone who has emerged out of her shell since having Jasper. I wish you lots of luck with your Jazzy.

i am already a confident walker, but over the last couple of years i have begum to 'question' myself and that is why i applied for a dog.

hopefully it means that i remain confident rather than having to lose it before i can get it back
