Thanks I spent plenty of time at auctions when I was younger

Me too; they have changed a lot and are no longer worth it for a private buyer all things considered but primarily the lack of any chance to seriously examine the car with engine running and lack of any comeback for a dud that you may well end up with as you can't test it. The fees are extortionate too for private buyers and sellers.

The fees are only slightly less for traders, the same cars will end up being sold for good money.
Its the main place to buy ex-fleet cars, all under one rook, and they have a cafe too ;)
  • If you've got the time, buying from private buyers on Autotrader can net you prices similar to auction ones with exactly the same amount of comeback (minimal).
I would doubt that very much.

My experience is the exact opposite. Private buyers of cars I looked at were asking almost the same as franchised dealers, without the warranty etc

That's fairly rare these days, and yes I've attended many an auction and bought a number of cars as a private buyer and never seen any phantom bidding.
It most certainly happens at my local auction and the auctioneer even says "off the wall" as a heads up to the traders as she ups the bid with a phantom one.

Plus you can thoroughly inspect the car and the seller!
  • Is there anyway of finding what a certain car sold for at bca
