As soon as you are spotted as a private buyer the auctioneer will totally focus on you and get you to up your bid even if there hasn't been a bid outbiding the private buyer
The auctioneers at the main centres (Mannheim, BCA etc) are professionals and wouldn't be in business for long if it were obvious that this was as extensive as you seem to make out. NO it's not a place for the beginner but if you have your wits about you and know what you want and how much you're prepared to pay beforehand then bargains can still be had.0 -
That's fairly rare these days, and yes I've attended many an auction and bought a number of cars as a private buyer and never seen any phantom bidding.

It would be a very poor auctioneer that made it obvious0 -

And at the end of the day if you've done your research and got a maximum figure that you're happy to pay and importantly you're disciplined and prepared to walk away, then what does it matter how that bid is eventually reached.0 -
I work in livestock auctions: "you know the auctioneer is lying- his lips are moving".
Never a truer word. Some are better than others.0 -
If you go enough times to know all the faces etc it becomes pretty obvious.

Seriously?
If I go to an auction prepared to pay £3k for a particular car and no one else bids on it you think I should be happy to pay £3k?
Might as well just bid my maximum then and not waste time with lower bids.0 -

How would you know ? At Manheim Colchester they have three auction rooms running at the same time , the speed of the vehicles through each room is rapid , they have the auctioneer and several spotters. People bid on cars and are not even in the room , the room can have over 100 people in it , you could get 25 bids in the first 10 seconds . Also online bidding is another issue. To say you know who is bidding as a bidder is like saying you can spot a person born in april ! One bidder i have spoken to just holds his auction list differently ro make a bid. I have been going for 32 years to this specific auction , long before Manheim took it over. All auctioneers do it when the opportunity arises , they are in their position to get the maximum price for the seller and the auction house. Experienced bidders who have been seen before will not attract too much attention of the auctioneer , especially if you are interacting with other bidders when not bidding. Private buyers are quite obvious and hence my comments. Private buyers beware , they are hardly good at it and get too nervous which is quite visible to many , not just the auctioneer.
Discipline on the price you want to pay is the crux of any auction , private buyers rarely stick to their maximum.0 -
Thanks I spent plenty of time at auctions when I was younger so know the added fees etc.
Me too but it's a complete waste of time now. The buyers premium is huge, the cars are all locked so you can't even look under the bonnet, and they are all 'sold as seen'. In my day you used to get every major component's description described in the car windscreen ticket and if you bought the car and it didn't match the description, you could reject it. You could also start the cars up before bidding. Not any more!0 -

They cars at Colchester are driven to the room/hall and are generally behind at least 5/6 othwrs. You get about 5 minutes to hear the engine running , check warning lights , under bonnet etc. They are also not all sold as seen and especially with their Manufacturer sales ( All Bmw , Merc etc ) all have had inspections by Manheim staff , graded , pointing out bidy damage fyres and wheels etc. The Online bidders only have what the auction house says , so if they were inaccurate it would effect the online bidding...... Take a look at Manheim Remarketing website to see what you get orior to auction .... You have to create an account but very simple , just like most modern day website...email addy and password.
Check it out today tomorrow and tuesday am and you will see 1000 Bmw's going through the 4 auction halls on Tuesday at Colchester0 -

Dont forget to check the fees for a private buyer to buy a single car. They can be quite high.0
