It could easily be argued stubbing out a cigarette leaves litter behind

Absolutely, if you walk off and leave the stub.

However if you stub it out and promptly take care to pick it up then it would not be an offence.

I think their point was that by stubbing it out, something is left behind.

It's a bit ridiculous to be honest. If you cough or sneeze and some of your fluids happen to hit the nearby bus stop, is that an offence too?

Blatantly throwing butts around should be, but we need to be a bit sensible here.

What a joke of a post. No wonder the floors are filthy with fag ends if this is the viewpoint.why are fag ends acceptable? Can I dump a Coke can? A takeaway box? Leave my dog poo on the floor as there's no nearby dog waste bin?

Not sure if dog owners are aware of this (I wasn't until another dog owner told me!) but you can put dog poo in any waste bin providing its bagged.

Makes things quite a bit easier as around here, they seem to have a habit of placing all the dog bins on patches of soil/grass that are marshland and prone to severe flooding.

I think that would be counted as ash, and ash from a cigarette is not considered litter IMO.

I can put out a cigarette easily and put it in my pocket.
Can end up going home with a pocket full of butts.

Surely a wind up? Why would anyone seriously think it is acceptable to drop cigarette butts wherever they like and it not be counted as littering?

    Hi guys

My wife was fined today for dropping a cigarette butt in an arrear that has no public waste bins nor CCTV, is this fine still enforceable? Apparently the council warden witnessed her dropping the litter whilst approaching her in his car.

Personally I would of thought this fine would be fully challengable due to points raised above. Can someone advise.

Dropping a cigarette butt is no different to dropping a crisp packet - it is littering so she needs to pay the fine.

It is never acceptable to drop litter. I am not sure why people think dropping cigarette butts is any more acceptable than dropping a crisp packet on the floor or flinging McDonalds wrappers out a car window.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I am a smoker and would never dream of chucking my discarded butt on the floor. I'll use a bin to put it out and dispose of it, and if there are no bins around, it gets wrapped up in tissue or a little bag until I get to a bin.

There is no excuse. She dropped it, she pays the fine. Now would be a good time for her to start thinking about carrying around a little mini ashtray or something

    Good for the Warden.

Don't suppose your wife drives a ten -twelve year old Fiesta? If so perhaps she could retrace her route this morning an pick-up the cigarette butt she threw out of the car in front of me about two hours ago!
  • I've been challenged before for doing the above, i stubbed it out and put it in the bin, the enforcement officer told as it had been on the floor, i had littered, i had a slight breakdown and ended up walking away with no charges but he didnt seem bothered that i intended to put it on the bin.

You should have pointed out that he was guilty of multiple counts of littering for constantly putting his shoes on the floor and then removing them.

Dropping litter is the habit of uneducated morons and there is no excuse for it.
    Fines should be higher
