got you, thanks Vort.. yes, TSB Debit seems the best option, unless that is maxed.
other than that i'd be looking at Amex/Barclaycard/Nationwide for cashback.. does TfL accept Amex?

Yes Tfl accepts Amex, just make sure your card is contactless (symbol will be on the back, not the front).

Don't forget with Santander if you use Apple Pay you get a bonus 3% on top of your normal 3% until end of Feb 2016. This has been running since Nov 2015. I've been using this offer on Tfl since then.

Perhaps the OP is a newbie who intended to post on a thread featured in this week's MSE email?

Yes, that's possible, and I did give the OP the benefit of the doubt by not marking it as spam.

The thing to note with Oyster vs contactless for capping is that a week long travel card on oyster starts from whatever select ("today" by default), whereas the contactless card will run Monday to Sunday.

This means that if you are in London for one week, but start it mid week, then an oyster with a weekly fare would be better - the contactless card will span 2 "weeks".

I occasionally travel to London via train and then use the underground/overgound service. I used to use an Oyster card for the within London journeys but I've found it is more expensive than getting an inclusive travelcard when booking the train ticket. This is because I have a Senior Railcard which gets me 30% of the London travel too.

It isn't a "set up fee", it's a refundable deposit. Everybody should know that as it clearly states it when you apply for one!

I have few Oyster card which I got from my friends who are not living in the UK. They use it at the time they visited London and do not need it any more. There are not any (or just few pence) left.

Could I get refund£5 from Tfl, by handing back this Oystercard ??

    Thanks

Provided it's a 'proper' Oyster card that they paid £5 deposit on, then yes you should be able to get a refund

If it is a Visitor Oyster there was a £3 non-refundable fee, so no £5 to get back

Perhaps a board guide could move it?

Planteria: Yes, you can use a contactless credit card, but you only get 3% cashback with Santander versus 5% with TSB debit.

How can 1 not realise they were NOT posting in the thread you linked to.
