Save in London

Two things. First, use an Oyster card on the underground, it's cheaper and easier, but when back home, call the number on the card, and they will tell you if there is any credit left on it. They will then return it to your bank, asking for details, but will also refund the £5 set up fee with the credit! ''Not many people know that''.
Secondly, if you have a bus pass, (pensioners), you can use London buses for free!

Not sure why you posted this in credit card forum but also your advice is wrong.

It's not cheaper to use an Oyster, just use any credit/debit card you own - no £5 fee for the card.

Also only people over the age of 60 who live in a London borough are eligible for free tube/bus travel in London - not just any old person!

    no
any 'old' person with an English bus pass can use London buses
but not the tubes, for free
  • It can actually be cheaper to use a contactless credit/debit card on the TFL network, contactless cards have Monday-Sunday fare capping, whereas Oyster is daily only.

Neither of these are Credit Cards - So please post in an appropriate forum, there are several potential candidates.

Hard to see why anyone would would register just to post such tosh without an ulterior motive, so I expect we'll be seeing spam from the OP before too long.

It isn't a "set up fee", it's a refundable deposit. Everybody should know that as it clearly states it when you apply for one!

odd thread.. but i didn't know that it was better Not to use Oyster..
i have an Oyster card for when i am in central London, but perhaps i should just scrap it and use Contactless Debit Card (TSB) when i'm there.. and earn Cashback.
can a Credit Card be used with the same good value?

Perhaps the OP is a newbie who intended to post on a thread featured in this week's MSE email?

    This one:

Perhaps a board guide could move it?

Planteria: Yes, you can use a contactless credit card, but you only get 3% cashback with Santander versus 5% with TSB debit.

I use my 123 credit card on TFL, 3% cash back and Mon-Sun capping, what's not to like.

got you, thanks Vort.. yes, TSB Debit seems the best option, unless that is maxed.
other than that i'd be looking at Amex/Barclaycard/Nationwide for cashback.. does TfL accept Amex?
