I had loads and loads of trouble with Nationwide when I opened an account with them in 2014. It took weeks and weeks to get the account up and running- their left hand and right hand never seemed to correspond: after the introductory interest offer I was pleased to switch. Even after setting up memorable data I could never use it!
TSB on the other hand has been fine, and the 5% interest on current a/c is not limited to the first 12 months.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

I had no problems opening up either my Nationwide or TSB current accounts. I opened the Nationwide in a branch and they gave me the card reader, I also got another one sent through the post. I was able to go online within a day and transfer money into the account and open up the regular saver. The TSB was opened up online but from memory I think I had to take in ID to the branch. I use the mobile banking apps for both and they are great.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards. Any experience of existing Nationwide customers getting the FlexDirect? I intend to open it in a couple of weeks but hope that already holding several accounts with them (and the cardreader, which I don't use - I use memorable data) will speed up the process.
I've had a dormant Nationwide Flex account (with internet access) for several years - I used to use it for withdrawing cash from ATM's when abroad when they had the 0% charge thing. Over Christmas I decided to try and upgrade it to the 5% jobbie. I went into the local branch, but had to book an appointment for later in the week.
Anyway, appointment day arrived, and I was changed over to the Flex direct 5%, and opened the Flex direct regular saver 5% within half an hour. Got home, and logged in, and both new accounts were already showing, so I transferred in the £2500, and paid in the first £500 to the RS.
So if you're an existing customer, doing it in branch should be virtually instantaneous once you get an appointment.
Cheers

Never had a problem, and never been declined. Even got a 'guaranteed acceptance' large limit Select card offered a couple of years ago, which I took (and still retain for the occasional overseas use).0 -
Can you explain how your account was hacked because you used your cardreader? I don't see how it would be possible.
I accessed my account from a work computer (bear in mind I'm a solicitor so I assumed it would be "clean"). Turned out there was a virus on it. Because you have 30 seconds or however long to enter the pin from the cardreader, the virus swept my numbers and entered them at the same time on another computer, as the correct code will stay the same for the [30 seconds]. Compare that with memorable data - every time you go to the login page, it asks for a different set of characters, so a simultaneous sweep and login by a virus doesn't work. Bear in mind this was Natwest - I think Nationwide asks for the whole memorable data rather than just a few characters (I usually use mobile banking so don't remember exactly).
Thanks for the advice all - it's in my diary to book an appointment to open my FlexD & FlexC next week in branch0 -

Thanks for explaining, that's something I've never heard of, although I'm cautious about which devices I use to log in to online banking and I'm pretty sure I've never used a work computer for it. Presumably then your own login failed because you were already logged in at another computer, which I hope rang huge alarm bells with you.
Yes, you're right that the full memorable data is entered for Nationwide, but that is backed up by requiring 3 of the 6 numbers in the passcode. I normally use this method rather than the card reader, mainly because I'd have to fetch the card reader from a drawer in another room and get my card out, it's just easier to use memorable data.0 -
On a slight tangent has anyone been referred by someone for more than one account to get the raf bonus, is this restricted to one account between those individuals or not?0

Yep from memory it didn't accept my login, and I remember thinking this was weird but I was young and naïve so just thought it was being annoying for no malicious reason! Luckily NatWest refunded the whole £1,000 that was stolen (in two separate transactions), partly because they were able to prove that my attempted login was in London (where I work) rather than Cambridge (where I live) and so the virus was not on my computer, and partly because I had not given my login details to anyone else. Hence my scepticism over YNAB's bank account linking, incidentally. On a slight tangent has anyone been referred by someone for more than one account to get the raf bonus, is this restricted to one account between those individuals or not?
No idea I'm afraid.
Another question from me though: when do TSB pay cashback? I thought it would be on interest paying day but evidently not. I phoned them yesterday and the lovely Geordie chap said it would be "sometime" in the month after spending...0
