Nationwide V TSB

Options
I opened both a TSB and Nationwide account on the 18/01/16 to take advantage of the 5% on their current account and monthly savers.
Within a week I was up and running with TSB.
Now Nationwide obviously use a snails pace approach!
I have received my card and pin but await my card reader to use the onlne banking. Went into the branch who gave me a reader and said all would be well!
So I tried and was met with computer says no.
It would not let me log on and said I had to wait for my card and reader!!
I called and was told that because it showed card reader pending I could not yet log on. I asked if they could tell the computer that I had a card reader but was told this was not possible.
So I have to wait.
The branch did say that online account opening was slower than in a branch!!

Yes it took ages to be able to log in but as soon as I had the sort code and account number I put £2500 in, I just couldn't see it for another couple of weeks!!!

What is it that you need to do online at the moment? You have the sortcode and account number so you can transfer money into the account, and you have a card and PIN so you can check the balance at any ATM. I only accessed mine online once a month to transfer back out the money that I'd transferred in to stay eligible for the 5%.
  • I don't need a card reader to log into mine; maybe it's because I don't have a current account with them yet?

You don't need a card or reader to log on to Nationwide online banking. You can use "memorable data" top right of the login page.
You will need the card and reader to set up any outgoing payments.

I had the same problem, everything came apart from the card reader, about 4 weeks later it finally turned up.

Any experience of existing Nationwide customers getting the FlexDirect? I intend to open it in a couple of weeks but hope that already holding several accounts with them (and the cardreader, which I don't use - I use memorable data) will speed up the process.

On the topic of cardreaders, my Natwest account got hacked a couple of years ago when I used it, and the branch manager I spoke to to have the money refunded to me said they're less safe than memorable data type entry. Apart from the fact that cardreaders are annoying, I also find they do not add any security.

I have both a Nationwide FlexAccount and TSB Classic Plus.

With the Nationwide account I received my customer number and online banking pass number in one letter. Armed with those and a piece of memorable information I could log into Online Banking. According to that letter I need the debit card, PIN and card reader to log in by that method. On the other hand, if you didn't provide memorable information you need to wait for the debit card and card reader to log in. In my case it took a month for the card reader to arrive!

How long did it take to get the sort code and account number from applying online?

If you can get an appointment the quickest way to open a Current acct with Nationwide is in branch. It should be open the next day. Then to open the Flexclusive saver you can fill in a form at the counter and they will open it by close of business that day. So if you have a branch near you with any staff free you could manage it in 2-3 days. By phone/internet more like 2-3 weeks with posting everything back and forth.

TSB could probably do the lot in branch in half an hour. Online you would have to wait for the internet banking stuff to come before you could open the saver. (Or try by phone).

If you want real snail pace account opening, try N&P. When I complained that they had taken over three weeks to open an account they directed me to the bit in their t&cs where it says it can 30 days.
