Hi friends,

I am planned for diamonds rings for my Engagement but problem is that I don't have enough knowledge about it. Please tell me how to select best qualities diamond rings.

  • Diamonds go by caret size and clarity so you would need to consider budget in place and then work from this ie:- £1000.00 will be low end main stream chain that offers very little for your money, If you budget for a lot more of say Ie:- £3000.00 plus then I suggest an independent store in a certain area, Maybe Hatton Gardens, or other large towns equivalent.
  • Do people REALLY spend £3000 on a ring?

Plenty would do and much more to boot, A good friend of mine on average wages spent around £2500.00 on the ring, I know plenty of others who would not spend as much but for some the money is not the issue and they will save for a long time as it is a symbol of love.

  • Yip, I've an engagement ring from Dubai and the difference in color is amazing compared to some of my friends rings. Color, cut and clarity are the three things to look for - I'd go into quite a few shops before I'd decide on one

Some of the bigger places like Hatton garden and Birmingham jewellery quarter would be the way to go! There they could probably work with your budget in a more flexible way.

Mine was £680 I think (bought one and a half years ago). It came from Hatton Garden so you don't HAVE to spend megabucks to get a ring from there.

I would prefer a small, good quality diamond over a larger, uncertified stone.

I would recommend looking at second hand rings on eBay. You can often pick up a bargain. I'm sure some people would have issues with a second hand ring, but you get much more ring for your money and if you have it professionally cleaned and polished it will look brand new anyway.

I think that is a terrible idea buying from eBay, Far to easy to be scammed and charged a premium for something worth far less than it sells for.

I second not having to spend £3000. What a ridiculous amount to unless you are rich (well we felt we couldn't justify it anyway!) I'm terrified enough of losing my ring and it cost £1000. Mine was from jewellery quarter and is a good quality diamond (if you were wondering those who know about diamonds is was E colour, round brilliant cut, VS2 on a platinum ring). The compromise is diamond size, but personally I don't like the look of the big chunky diamond rings, a smaller diamond looks more elegant in my opinion, but that's just personal taste. Mine was .32 carot with extra small diamonds to the total of .16 carot either side. I'm very happy with it, I'm glad we didn't spend more money. Bought summer 2014.

Google 'diamond geezer' and 'blue nile'.
Both have pretty good explanations of the 4 'C's - carat, colour, cut, clarity.
ETA - not recommending thses websites for purchase as I've never bought from them, just for research/information.
