If a CRA gives you a perfect 999, then it's a given that there are no late payments, defaults, or anything else in the file they hold on you that would be a negative when applying for credit. If you are denied credit, it will be because of something not contained in the credit report, i.e. something reported by a different CRA, some previous experience the lender has with you, or for some reason not matching their arbitrary 'profile'.

SO, since that is the case, if you get a perfect 999, what would be the point of scouring your file looking for problems? There aren't any. If you're denied credit, it's not because of anything contained in that file.

No matter what your "credit score" you should ALWAYS throughly check your credit report. What if your address is displayed incorrectly in your credit report?. They wouldn't know it was incorrect and you would be denied any credit you applied for but you could still get a 999 score!. What if you have just moved house and changed your address on the electoral roll. But it hasn't updated yet!, you could still get your 999 score but you wouldn't get approved for any credit!.

So even if the score used a credible calculation it still would not be a good indicator of credit worthyness!.
  • In summary

Don't pay too much attention into your credit score, the detail on your credit report is more important.

That said, if you are curious about your score, Barclays customers can get a free score (not the report) every 60 days via activating in 'account services' from the very reputable Experian.

And for god's sake, don't pay for it, Pixie would go mental.

    Cheers

  • My experian score is over 950 and I have 3 settled defaults from 3-4 years ago. I also have several late payments from the same time period. My noddle rating is 2/5 even though ousba (where my defaults come from) don't report to them. Scores really mean nothing.

i have used experian a lot and thought my credit scrore was excellent at 970 out of 999. i have a couple of credit cards all paid regularly , mortgage with no missed payments. everything is paid up to date

however i applied yesterday for a sim only deal and was refused. i then looked at CLEARSCORE which is free and low and behold i had defaulted on a current account with first trust a few years ago. this was only for £100 when i had switched to a different bank and had overlooked the overdraft.

therefore why pay £14.99 a month to experian who supply you with a report that may not be a true representation?

just had a barney with them over the phone and got my £14.99 refunded and cancelled my account with them

In Experian's defence, if First Trust don't report to them, they can't show the data.

Not all companies report to all 3 agencies, this is why to get a true accurate picture of your credit history you need to obtain reports from ALL 3 credit reference agencies - not just the one you see advertised everywhere.
