I own a Prestige stainless steel one - in 35 years of marriage I have had 3 prestige ones and will always buy and have one on the go. The best thing for stock from chicken bones and making soup - its fast and wonderfully saving on electricity. You can do many things in it including steamed puddings but I tend to use mine for soup and sometimes mince. I dont have a slow cooker - I prefer the pressure cooker.Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j0

i have been thinking about getting a pressure cooker as it seems good for making stews etc in and i never did seem to get on with a slow cooker. Just wish i could test try one first though rather than buying one and finding out i dont get on with them.Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts0

I use it for winter stews or to cook chilli in a fraction of the time it takes usually. I would never use it for veg on its own but veg in soups and stews is fine.0

I bought my pressure cooker over 10 years ago and its still going strong ( I've replaced the seal half a dozen times and OH has tightened the handle once) Its not exactly beautiful but is used six or seven times a week and is showing no signs of wearing out.
My mum had one and the only reason I don't use that one was that my sister got there first.
Definately a moneysaver

Cuddlymarm, please can you tell me how you can tell that the seal needs replacing? I bought a spare but have no idea how I would know it was time to change it!

I too have had a Prestige in the past but to be honest, they frighten me witless with all that steam and hissing and fear of valves blowing. I much prefer my slow cooker.
The pan isn't wasted though as I use it as a large extra saucepan now and then.

Is it worth buying one ??? I would say yes as it looks nice on the shelf :rotfl: . I am like paddys mum. Scare the life out of me. Will get round to using it one day

I'm thinking of buying a pressure cooker for a pressent for my mum but was wondering if anyone can recommend one i've been looking at :

but i've read a few bad reviews about it not holding the pressure for long and it needing replacement parts etc.
Can any one recommend any other good ones ? what things should i look out for i'm really just looking for one that will last and not caust to many problems

the pressure cooker i use myself is a fairly simple one - a Tower. OH bought me one of the cheaper ones to see how i got on with it first, but i've had it a year now and it gets used almost every day! i don't know how i ever lived without one.
i would say a basic but solid model is best - they do not need to be fancy with built-in timers etc, but it is essential they close hermetically and continue to do so. as for replacement parts, every pressure cooker needs a new gasket from time to time, that is quite normal (haven't changed mine yet but will soon).
if ever i buy another one, it will have to be one that is stainless steel (instead of aluminium), and can go in the dishwasher.

I have a Prestige pressure cooker which I've used fairly regularly for 25 years. I've replaced the gasket a few times, but that's all! John Lewis and Robert Dyas used to stock spare parts but they don't any more (I think it's because pressure cookers went out of fashion) but I understand you can get spare parts from the Prestige website.
