Poor quality beds!

I have just moved into a 2-bed flat with someone else and paid a deposit, inventory fee, one months' rent plus agency fee and realised today that the mattresses are of very poor quality. We can hear (& feel!) the springs groaning beneath us when we sit on the beds! I don't want to start moaning straight away and it is up to me as my flatmate won't, but I sometimes get back pain and so can't put up with my bed the way it is. I plan to write about it on the inventory but I wonder if the landlord will actually purchase new beds, or at this stage, is it just tough luck?!
I don't have the money for it but I was thinking as a last resort I may have to buy a decent mattress myself and lug it round with me whenever I move flats!!
Any advice would be much appreciated - and yes I really am wishing I had checked the beds out before signing on the dotted line! (I usually do, but didn't want to embarass the flatmate in front of the person who was showing us round the flat! Kicking myself now!!)

have a word with the landlord/agent if the mattress isnt up to scratch.
if they aren't prepared to do anything about it then a mattress topper or even a very thick duvet on top of the mattress should offer an extra bit of comfort for less than buying a new mattress (and will be easier to take with you when you move!)know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
Thanks! These are good ideas - not sure what a topper is though? Is it the same as a mattress protector?0

a matress protector is a very thin fitted sheet that you slot over the mattress to help cut down on bed bugs and asthma allergens. it is for hygiene reasons for than anything, and helps to prolong the life of the mattress by cutting down on the amount of your sweat and dead skin cells that get absorbed into the mattress. nice!
a matress topper is much thicker - like the icing on a cake if you want to think of it in those terms. it is essentially a bed sized cushion that you sleep on to make your existing matress super comfortable. you will find them for sale all over, ikea and argos being two big high street suppliers.know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
as an afterthought... if your LL is not prepared to shell out for a new matress, see if they'd be prepared to buy you a mattress topper as a cheaper way to make their tenant happyknow thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0

Personally I really doubt that they'll do anything about the mattress even if you do complain. Your best bet is to actually get a note from your doc saying about ur back pain and that it could potentially be made worse from the mattress.
Saying that, when I was in halls I had a room which had a damp problem, had a note from the doc that it was making me ill and they did sweet FA about it!
It all depends how nice the a) landlord and b) rental company isMy mortgage costs me a sobering £13.06 A DAY!:mad:That's about 5 pairs of shoes a month i'm missing out on! :eek:0 -
First of all was the mattress new when you moved in?
If not then you probably have more chance of getting a new mattress out of them.
If the mattress isn't sagging or worn out then purchase a memory foam mattress topper from ebay. However make sure that the desity of the memory foam is between 55kg per m3 and 67kg per m3. Also make sure that the memory foam is between 2" and 2 1/2" deep. There are loads to choose from so make sure you follow the above guidlines and check their feedback.0 -

Hi, no the mattress wasn't new when I moved in. I called 2 days ago and said they weren't up to scratch... they said they would ask the landlord about replacing them... haven't heard anything yet. Fingers crossed!0 -
Hey, just thought you might like to know that I had exactly the same problem as you when I moved into my flat. The mattresses were so thin and rubbish that someone had tried to put two really bad ones together! They were so thin at the thinnest part that if you put one finger on top and one underneath, your fingers would meet!
Anyway, I too got really bad backache as a result, and told my landlord and asked if it would be possible for him to get new mattresses and he did it. He was actually pretty appalled at the state of the old ones. In all probability your landlord may not know that your mattress is in that state - why not say you were wondering whether he knew what state the previous tenants had left the mattresses in...that way it doesn't sound like you're blaming him.
Don't put up with it though - it's really bad for your spine and posture in the long run.0 -
