Does your friend's employer allow somebody else to use the tickets? Sounds as though your friend should check as they might be putting their job at risk. I suspect not, else you wouldn't have to ask.

40% discount - no wonder the fares are spiralling, especially if they are being used by non-authorised persons.

Regular National Rail tickets (ie, singles, returns, Day Rangers etc) can be bought by anyone, for anyone.

The name printed on the ticket is that of the purchaser.

That's the whole purpose of the discount; it would be a bit daft to give their own staff a discount, given the staff travel free.

They are not being used by "non-authorised persons"

The question I'm asking is if a staff-discounted ticket can be used by a friend.

If it can, then why is the OP asking the question here? They should be asking the friend.

Why do you think the OP is enquiring about a 'staff-discounted ticket'?

Assuming we're talking about normal National Rail tickets, printed on standard National Rail ticket stock, most tickets purchased online have the name of the purchaser printed on the ticket these days.

You can buy tickets for anyone. Most tickets I use are bought by someone else, and most tickets I buy are for someone else.
you mean via the national rail site?!

You can't buy tickets on the National Rail Enquiries site.

No-one is holding a gun at you to post anything at all!

But why/how does your "friend" get a 40% discount off his employer when buying tickets he then sells on to you is a reasonable question! (Seeing as you inexplicably decided to go OT and brag about it here)

    Go back to post #9.
If you buy a ticket a ticket on line and have it printed out at a station ticket machine it will almost certainly have your name on it no matter which train company site you used to do the on line purchase.

As far as I know, any ticket bought online will have the name of the purchaser printed on it.

I suppose I could leave incorrect information unchallenged, but I think that the people asking the questions deserve accurate information.

I was asked why I don't buy my own tickets. I answered that question.

It's not that uncommon to find service-based companies giving discounts to friends & family of employees (e.g.O2, Sky, etc), so I am surprised anyone is doubting this.
