I think their electorate is even more polarised than here.

In both countries it has been so long since we had a genuinely left wing government people have forgotten just how bad it was.

There's an entire generation of young people who have never had to deal with double digit unemployment, three day weeks, mass strikes, and unions wrecking the economy.

Probably why so many youngsters vote for people like Sanders and Corbyn... ;)

The crazy thing is that there are good candidates on both sides who haven't stood, or are being knocked out early by dint of being too establishment.

I would have loved a Bloomberg vs Trump debate, he's about the only person who could say "seriously, only $10bn?"

If we had ended up (who knows it might still happen) with Trump vs Saunders I could imagine that Bloomberg might have run as an independent (with the backing of both the Republican and Democrat establishments....)
    I think....
  • I wasn't expecting that result when I turned on the news this morning. Cruz seems like an absolute nightmare as well so I'm not sure if it is a relief or not that Trump didn't come first.

I'm still not entirely sure if Trump is serious in the things he says or if he is just trolling?!

Trump v Saunders would be a great laugh.....until the day after election day and one of them has won.

Mr Bloomberg must be kicking himself for not standing this year. He is probably the only really experienced candidate that can stand as an outsider (Arnie can't stand).

    Slightly off topic so apologies...

I find the US system for selecting the candidates for the president interesting. It always now starts with Iowa and then New Hampshire. Some are Caucuses, others are primaries (Iowa is the first, New Hampshire is the second type), some a mix of both. Some candidates do better in a caucus scenario than a primary and vice versa.

Then you have the state primaries in order, by Super Tuesday in March we will have a good idea who the candidates will be, yet many populous states still won't have voted.

It's an interesting subject to read about imo.

Hillary Clinton wins six delegates by coin toss ...

If the Yanks don't watch out, Donald Trump's head will be on the coin next year!

At least they've got a proper constitution.
  • If Trump doesn't get the Republican nomination, will he go from being "The" Donald to just "A" Donald?

Trump, however, who said during the debate that as president, he would “bring back waterboarding, and I would bring back a hell of a lot worse.”

Whether or not Bloomberg would stand was the subject of a brief spot on the R4 news this evening. They said that if he does, he needs to declare before March so that he can get on the different state ballots.

He has apparently been making noises, though at the same time saying to friends that standing as an independent is unwinnable.

    Interesting times.

    The FT reckons he'll stand.

No third party candidate has come close since the silver standard mob in the C19th (can't remember the name of the party).
