I have to say, I don't think much of your morals for wanting to effectively claim HB through your son (as you're not charging your son, you're effectively taking his HB).

When did we all lose our pride and end up relying on the government for handouts?

Im sorry Melissa I dont really understand what you mean. I would like him to pay something towards his keep but I dont want to take too much because he has only just started work and isnt going to be earning much anyway.

I would be taking any HB that he could get as his housekeeping in order for him to keep all his wages that way we could both benefit.

I have a great deal of pride in fact. My husband and I both work full time and both pay tax and I thought that this was a genuine way of claiming something for once. As it is not possible I will ask for a token houskeeping from him something like £20. per week.

I know of many people who fraudently claim benefits and I am far from this just exploring a possibility.

    What a nasty answer.

Sure, but by getting your son to claim HB, which is (in reality) for yourself, that is just wrong. HB is for people who genuinely would not be able to have anywhere else to live, not for people who have somewhere to live and want to give their mother some extra income.

My family went through some pretty tough times when I was young, but we never claimed any benefits. 35K a year isn't a huge wage, but it's not a bad one!

On the flip side, people with lower incomes are taxed far too much - that's the other big scandal.

I think the humour got lost in the typing. I have always worked full time and completely intend to carry on doing so. I love my job and I love earning my money. It was a joke " back to work for me then" I ve only been off for the summer holidays - I work in a school! Son doesnt even know anything about this so its not saying anything to him at all.

I am sorry if I ve upset anyone just wanted a bit of advise really - I guess I got some!

Im sorry if this seems a bit rude, but if your son is 17, then shouldnt you be shouldering the responsibility of his board if he is furthering his education?

Yes I am doing so I just wish his father saw it that way rather than stopping maintenance on his 17th birthday as per the court order. So his responsibility is over but mine will continue for ever ( which is fine its why I go to work to support my children ) before someone has a go at me about that comment.

That is very sad re: the father stopping maintenance. He might as well be saying his doesn't care about his son's ambitions to get a good post-16 education.

I guess thats what the court order said so thats what hes doing. I suppose I should be grateful that he has contributed for the last fifteen years. I have left if up to my son to approach his father now if he requires any help but of couse I will continue to support him wholeheartedly.
