Suggestions for trip to Malaga, Gibraltar

You can get to lots of places from Malaga, but my experience of the area has been that you'd need a car. Gibraltar is okay and probably worth a visit if you want to drive for 1 1/2 hours. Just before you get to the entrance to Gib, there is a massive carpark in La Linea that is quite cheap, a lot easier just to walk across the tarmac than trying to drive in.

Marbella is worth a visit and depending on how you enjoy spending the evening, Puerto Banus is pretty lively.

From a cultural point of view (and again assuming that you have a car), then Alhambra Palace is a couple of hours drive in the other direction in Granada and that is well worth a trip. Fantastic place and also some great views as you drive through the hills.

Not been to Morocco from Spain, but would probably not bother during a 4 day trip as there is more than enough to do in Spain.

I had a travel to Gibraltar in march last year. Frankly, it was the best time to travel - good weather (+18+20 and sunny!!!) a few tourist! All interesting places are yours!
I have stayed near by Puerto Banus - Coral Beach. Our apartment overlooks the sea and cost 70 GBP for 1 bedroom fully equiped apartment.
We were living in Marbella and traveling to Gibraltar, Nerja, Torremolinos. If you are going to visit Costa Del Sol don't foget to visit largest caves in Europe - Nerja.
As well we visited Crocodile park in Torremolinos, it is amazing and had a chance to hold in their hands real baby crocodile!

For me the most impressive city was Setenil de las Bodegas in 17 km from Ronda, and obviously, Ronda with Giant Canyon under Puento Nueve bridge.

Thanks again for the replies. We've decided to hire a car as it's quite cheap.

We're probably going to stay in la Linea for a night rather than Gibraltar.

We're struggling to find reasonably priced accommodation in Malaga with parking. We'e only going to spend one day in the city itself - can anyone suggest somewhere else to stay for four nights? We're considering Nerja but it seems touristy.

I wouldn't bother having the car while you are in Malaga, just hire one for the days that you want to go somewhere else. Not only is parking pretty difficult it can be a bit of a nightmare driving around the city.

Nerja is touristy, but it's hard to find anywhere on the Costa del Sol that isn't, given that it's such a huge industry for the area. It's certainly one of the nicer tourist destinations, and it's a real town rather than just a collection of concrete apartment buildings.

Check the long thread on problems with car hire in Spain. Usually if the headline price is low you end up paying more with various charges added on... not to mention outright rip-offs.

Public transport is good, so if you value your sanity I suggest that you rely on this and leave car-hire for the lawyers.

I've just advise you not to rent a car at local and budjet firm. I saw a giant queue at check-in Budget Car at airport, and people would have been waiting for collection his car more than hour...
