Suggestions for trip to Malaga, Gibraltar

Can anyone make some suggestions for a trip to this area in March for 4/5 days? Flight to Malaga only booked at present. We're looking for budget accommodation and are considering Airbnb.

My adult daughter and I are travelling and would like to go to Gibraltar and Morocco when there.

We like culture, watersports, markets etc.

Would be grateful for any advice/suggestions.

Thanks in advance

There's plenty to see and do in and around Malaga, particularly as you want to spend time on the beach.

For such a short visit, I don't think visiting Morocco is practical, but you could go on a day trip to Gibralter if you wanted.

You used to be able to travel by ferry from Gib to Tangiers.
    Don't think they run now.

Gib is OK for a day visit but not really much there. I used to work there.
How is the border crossing now?
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.
  • Think about Fuengirola, not a lot of culture, there is a theatre, but markets, large general market on Tuesday and Flea market on Saturday.

You can get on the train from the airport easily and cheaply.

Loads of day trips to Gibraltar by coach. Border last year was OK.

You can get to Mijas, Marbella by service bus and Malaga by train.

Look at Tripadvisor for local knowledge. Be wary at the moment using Los Boliches train station, it's closed for renovation.

March is a bit early in the year for the tourist season, so a lot of things will be closed still. I'd say your best bet is to stay in Malaga, where the cultural attractions (excellent museums, galleries, and if you're lucky music) will be available. I'd be surprised if things like water parks are operating, although they might open for Easter. Rather than go to Gib I'd recommend a day trip to Granada to visit the Alhambra, or even Cordoba to see the Mosque. If you don't want to stay in Malaga then like deva I would suggest Nerja, which is a lovely town.

Gib is lovely, just do not fall for the "stroll down the Rock" - it's a long downwards path & your legs will complain about it for Days. Stunning scenery, just check for the local grins...
  • Go to Nerja. i thought Gibraltar was grim.
  • If you have never visited Gibraltar it is well worth a visit, from having the traffic lights turning red on the only access road because a plane is landing across the road to the apes at the top of the rock and everything being British, Morrisons supermarket, loads of high street shops etc, all this on a small spit of land attached to Spain, then do it.

Morocco is easy with frequent ferries to Tangiers from Algeciras which is a bus ride from Malaga. But I think you would need more than 4 or 5 days away to fit this in as you would need at least an overnight stop there. I would take the train from Tangiers to Fez which is a real experience.

If you just went straight to Morocco it would make sense but I don't think there is time to do Malaga as well. There is plenty in Malaga to keep you occupied for a few days if you choose to stay there.
  • I hated Gibraltar. The Apes were worth seeing and the caves but nothing else. Malaga is much nicer, there are foodie market tours which are free I think. You can get the ferry to Tangier.
