Suggestions for trip to Malaga, Gibraltar

Morocco is easy with frequent ferries to Tangiers from Algeciras which is a bus ride from Malaga. But I think you would need more than 4 or 5 days away to fit this in as you would need at least an overnight stop there. I would take the train from Tangiers to Fez which is a real experience.

If you just went straight to Morocco it would make sense but I don't think there is time to do Malaga as well. There is plenty in Malaga to keep you occupied for a few days if you choose to stay there.

Bear in mind even using the motorway Algerciras is approx. 140 km. from Malaga.

Thanks for the replies. We're now thinking of going straight from Malaga airport to Gibraltar for one night and omitting Morocco.

Can anyone suggest the best way of getting from Malaga airport to Gibraltar and where to stay when there. Like the look of https://www.tripadvisor.ie/Hotel_Review-g187510-d231585-Reviews-Caleta_Hotel-Gibraltar.html but it's a bit pricey. Would there be a way of getting it cheaper?
  • You do have to walk across the border from Spain to Gibraltar.

So what you have to do is get to La Linea, walk across the border then get a bus or taxi into the town.

I agree get to La Linea and then walk across the border into Gib across the runway , its an experience , you can walk into town from the border or take the bus. There really is loads to see , take a walk from the town centre Casemate Square down Main St as far as the Cable car which you can take to the top of the rock, visit the caves and see the spectacular views from the top, you can see Africa clearly on a good day. There is a Botanical Gdns and you can visit the Museum or the shops .You can walk back down into town and the restaurants are inumerable and very good. Or take a bus to one of the several beaches around Gibraltar. I've been many times as I have family there and I love it. There is opportunity to take a Dolphin Safari out into the Bay of Gibraltar..

I hated Gibraltar. The Apes were worth seeing and the caves but nothing else. Malaga is much nicer, there are foodie market tours which are free I think. You can get the ferry to Tangier.

    But not direct from Malaga.

I have never seen Gibraltar, but would point out that there are some wonderful destination close to Malaga. For such a short trip, I suggest that you get a guide book (I used the Rough Guide to Andalucia) and choose some key destinations rather than rushing to Gibraltar and missing places on the way that you might enjoy more.

We did a similar trip a few years ago, but flew into Gibraltar, for the experience of such an unusual airport as much as anything. Then got the ferry to tangier, travelled down through morocco by bus and train and flew back from Marrakech, flights were single tickets but starting a nod ending in Luton.

It was a good trip but needed the full two weeks.

I don't understand the logic of booking a trip to Malaga and then rushing off to Gibralter - if that's where you wanted to be, why not go there in the first place?

Better to explore the place you're staying properly (there's a lot to see in Malaga) and build in some relaxation time as well, particularly on a short break like this.
  • It all depends on where in the UK the OP lives.

There are fewer flights into Gibraltar, at the moment Gatwick, Heathrow, Luton, Birmingham and Manchester.

I will say though it is an experience to land and take off from Gibraltar.
