TalkTalk to BT speed slowdown. No idea why.

I switched from TalkTalk last month to BT. Neither were/are fibre.

Recieved 17mbps with TalkTalk, but BT only give me 6.1mbps.

They say this is the maximum my line can handle.

No infrastructure changed when I switched, I just don't get it.

My account in mybt says I can receive up to 17mbps, but the BT helpline says I can only get 6mbps.

Can somebody advise me please?

There is an infrastructure change though. You have gone from using TT equipment to / in the exchange to using BT / Openreach equipment all the way.

That still shouldn't account for such a huge reduction in speed.

Have you connected to the test socket?

What results do you get when you put your telephone number into the BT Wholesale ADSL availability checker?

Are you testing via wireless? If so the BT router might be using a congested channel whereas the TT router might have been using a different uncongested channel.

You can download an app on a smartphone to see how many routers are operating on a particular channel and then chose one via your router settings that is less congested.

This happened to me, router was using the default Ch6 which is what most use, when I changed to Ch 11 my speed shot up.

I had worse speeds moving from talktalk to plusnet. All the rest of my set up stayed the same, wifi channels all fine. Very annoying.

I did the same move about 2 1/2 years ago and noticed the same (although nowhere near as extreme as your difference). TT was noticeably faster although it wasnt a very stable connection. I wasnt on TT equipment at the exchange though. I guess in my case the difference was linked to the stability problems.

I have fibre with Sky now and 'so far', i am pleased with both the speed and stability.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it's not possible to get 17Mb on an up to 17Mb connection, so can you remember what your actual connection speed was like with Talk Talk?

molerat is spot on about the infrastructure change though. I switched from BT to Be years ago going from BT's infrastructure to the LLU option from Be, I think BT could only offer up to 8Mb on my line at the time and I was getting around 6Mb, whereas Be could offer up to 16Mb, and I got around 11Mb on it. Even now the BT exchange checker (https://www.btwholesale.com/includes/adsl/adsl.htm?s_cid=ws_furls_adslchecker) shows my standard broadband can only support up to 11Mb. (thanks to lee111s for posting this link on another thread).

If your line supports up to 17Mb with both Talk Talk and BT, although you are changing equipment at the exchange, it does seem strange that you're getting a significant drop in speed. Can you use that BT exchange checker to see what speed it says you can get?

OP,
Most likely you were previously on a Talktalk ADSL2+ service which supports up to 24meg and you're now on a BT ADSL1 service which only supports up to 8 meg. In other words, talktalk have installed ADSL2+ equipment at your exchange while BT haven't and are still using their clapped out old 20CN network to supply your broadband. Couple of things you can do to confirm this:

1) Type your phone no or postcode here & then click on your exchange. What does it say under '21CN WBC status' & 'Talktalk LLU presence'?

2) Go to the BT ADSL checker, enter your BT number and if there's no 'WBC ADSL2+' mentioned anywhere then BT indeed can only offer you their up to 8 meg service.

Technically speaking Talktalk LLU is an 'up to 24 meg' service even though they advertise it as an up to 16/17 meg service - all ISPs were forced to do this by ASA.

Ah right, wasn't aware of that. Do you know the reasoning behind ASA enforcing this?
