    Vista is still supported with security updates until 2017, so it could be downloading them.

    try "netstat -a -n" and post so we can see the IP addresses

    Wireshark is a handy tool for checking network activity - i found that my wireless webcam was generating a lot of outbound traffic so firewalled it off by adding a rule to my router blocking outbound traffic from the cam's ip address.
  • No webcam, wireless or otherwise.
    I've had avast for over a year and not had downloads like this.
    I'll give wireshark a try tomorrow when I get home.
