Always downloading something?

My computer is downloading something at 120 kbps all the time, even with no pages open. The only way I can stop it is by disconnecting the wi-fi. How do I find out what it is doing and stop it?
As I am on satellite broadband I have only a 10gb monthly allowance and this will sap in in no time at all.
Thanks in advance.
Russ

What operating system are you running?

Windows, I think it is XP. It's on the desktop and I'm not at home to check atm.Russ.0

Start it in Safe mode with networking (press F8 repeatedly as it boots and before the Windows logo appears) and see if it's still downloading something. Shouldn't be.
Assuming it isn't, the next step is to find out what is causing the download, but at least that is a start.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. As above, try running in Safe Mode and see if it stops.
Then try running netstat to see what connections are open:

If your using Windows 7, could it be the microsoft free upgrade to Windows 10 that is downloading?Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -
Just turned it on and it's running windows vista home premiumRuss.0

Maybe Vista or whatever anti-virus system you have on it is downloading an update? Although mainstream support for Vista ceased in 2012, so I would doubt if it is updating.
Have two ex-Vista machines, one is now on Windows 10, and the other on Linux, wouldn't put either of them back - it would be too cruel.
Could still try safe mode and take it from there.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. I've started as suggested and it's still downloading something.
I don't think it's updates as it's been doing this for days now.Russ.0 -
