Would You Be Happy With This Flooring?

Hi

I got a joiner in to do my laminate floors. Towards the end, I did an inspection to check if everything was ok.

I noticed that the beading had not been recessed into the door frame, and said 'I don't like this.'

I was taken aback at the response. The joiner became quite irate, said it was 'cheap laminate anyway,' packed up and left (without completing job.)

Looking at the photo, was it me being a 'perfectionist prat,' or what? I'm no joiner, but in the past I've done similar jobs, and would have recessed the beading into the door frame. He told me 'that costs money.' I offered more money, yet he still stormed off.

In my opinion ....that's sh1ttier than I'd do it myself .... on the basis I have no idea what I'm doing, I have no skills, no natural ability, never seen it done before .... but I still think I'd make a better job of it (if I had the tools and was shown how to use them).

Maybe he'd just not finished and it wouldn't look anything like that when he'd be finished.

    It does look awful.

I would give a day for him to cool off and then call stating what needs to be done to rectify the beading issue.

Thanks so I'm not being a prat after all. Please ignore the gaps, he expects me to fill them with sealant myself, which I'm happy to do.

The main issue is the shoddy trim/beading.

I don't think I'll approach him again to be honest. Will rip it up when I'm in a better mood, and do the job myself.

His attitude was just plain wrong.

He told me it would 'cost money' to recess the beading into the door frame - I did it 10 years ago, it took 5 minutes with a chisel.
  • I would have under cut it round there and not used beading.
  • at BykerSands. It was a cheap job. Personally I would have taken a bit out the door frame with chisel.

Overall I paid £100 (cheap,) he reduced the price by £20, and left. There is even a blinking bit of beading missing.

The bizarre thing is he has tons of good ratings as a joiner. The attitude however was just plain wrong.

Budget laminate is so 90's, it has to be done right, the clip together DIY versions make it near impossible to go under door frames as the whole plank section has to be dropped in as one.
The trim can be recessed, but you should have made this very clear at pricing and he could have allowed an extra day.
I do Contracts, all day every day.
  • He's really let himself down with the finishing and made what's probably a decent job on the flooring look crap.

Which would only be a problem if there was a door at each end of the run.
