I moved into council emergency accommodation on 5th January. 2 days in we noticed cockroaches. Reported them. Found out there had been an exterminator a month previously.

He came round again put Gel bait traps down. The next day saw lots of roaches of all sizes, did decrease in numbers thereafter. But today I'm still seeing them. The exterminator said it should take up to 5 days to get rid of them. I'm seeing all sizes still.

I can't unpack in the kitchen. I'm using four small wall cupboards, everything in sealed storage boxes. The rest of the kitchen stuff is unpacked. I keep using perticide sprays and am now having real problems with my asthma necessitating 8 steroid tablets a day and lots of ventolin useage.

I am meticulously clean. Don't leave any food particules around, clean up while cooking and after.

Am I expecting too much (in expecting the cockroaches to have become only an occasional sighting by now)? As I am in emergency accommodation (and lucky to get a two bed maisonette) I am not sure I can push too far. But I am not sure what the exterminator is doing is even working.

I pointed out full height vents leading from the side and going behind the kitchen cupboards., he didn't put any bait traps there. He only put about 5 or six in the whole house (apparently he just treated the kitchen before but they are in a bedroom and lounge as well).

I've just seen one on my superclean brand new stove top..., I've sprayed pesticide but its run into the inside of the hob. It is clean, and is cleaned after every useage.

I'm getting a bit fed up now.

If they are in your maisonette, neighbouring ones need to be treated simultaneously for effective results.

It takes time to eradicate them due to breeding cycles.

And if they are next door, they'll come back unless treated there too.

Blocking holes is, well, I guess it does no harm and may do some good, but they can get through tiny gaps, and even chew their way though where there are no gaps....

  • Can you get a cat? They are brilliant cockroach killers. Mine used to bring me a present every now and then, eventually I think word got around and I didn't see any more ...
  • OMG I would be out of my mind. Is there no other accommodation? Can you ask them to move you?

  • If it were me, I'd be phoning the council again, take photos &/or videos. If the pest controller said 5 days - it's now way beyond that - I'd be calling everyday. Can't bloody stand them!

    Have your neighbours noticed them?

I suspect the 5 days is to kill the actual roaches. But you probably have eggs deposited round the place which will continue to hatch out, so you need to get them too. That DIY trap is worth a go. Otherwise keep everything as dry as possible - they can survive without food but not without water.

Thankfully, I have not had the problem of having to exterminate cockroaches ( and I hope that pleasure will be indefinitely postponed! ;) ) but I would agree that the neighbouring properties around you should be treated as well, or the little devils will simply move backwards and forwards from your neighbours to you.

We have had woodworm in wooden stables and they needed several treatments to exterminate them and they do need to be treated at fairly regular intervals to make sure that once the eggs hatch, they're caught as well.
A cunning plan, Baldrick? Whatever it was, it's got to be better than pretending to be mad; after all, who'd notice another mad person around here?.......Edmund Blackadder.
