JD Sports took money twice, refund in 3 to 5 days!

I've just been to buy trainers at JD Sports (special gift, ridiculous prices). Tried to pay with credit card twice but the machine said card "not authorised". Used a debit card to pay. Left store, called bank who confirmed that the initial transaction on the credit card had gone through. Back into JD Sports, manager makes several phone calls and is polite throughout. Tells me that the money will be in a holding account and should be refunded within 3 to 5 days. Tried my credit card in another shop, no problem at all with my card.

I am not happy. I tried to get an instant refund from the manager in the store but failed miserably. 3 - 5 working days is ridiculous, particularly as they took money from two of my cards instantly and I know for a fact it is possible to reverse the transaction instantly too.

Can this be legal? What can I do? I kept calm and polite (at least externally) but this just cannot be right. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions?

Based on my experience refunds never are instant.
The best you can do is to calm down.

It may be instant from the shop, but would still take processing time by both banks too :)

I'm calm. Not happy, but calm. The people at the bank said the shop can sort it straight away. I've forgotten exact words but something along the lines of reverse transaction. I've paid twice through no fault of my own. I'm feeling this is one of those "the computer said No" instances. David Walliams has got it spot on.

    Thanks for such quick responses.

Just managed to get through to Trading Standards\Citizens advice and it seems that I have to just shut up and put up. My words, not theirs.

I am entitled to a refund "within a reasonable period of time" and 3 - 5 working days would fall into this definition of reasonable even though a payment was taken without my consent.

I know it's just annoying and there are bigger things to worry about in this world but I will be avoiding JD in the future and warning anyone else planning on spending with JD.

You'll find the same with most retailers, if not all. Are you going to avoid them all?

Standard practice from any retailer I'm afraid. They literally cannot transfer the £ back into your account straight away. The few days delay is down to your bank, not JD Sports.

Standard procedure. The fact you've paid on a credit card means you have nothing to worry about really. It's not your money.

The OP used a debit card.

I would have preferred to pay on my credit card. They money has now gone from my bank account. It very much is my money.

You live and learn. I didn't know this was standard procedure. I do try to avoid all shops that annoy me. I can do without agro.

Indeed, but the refund will be going back onto the credit card.

Last time I read the original post, they OP was complaining about the timescale of a refund for payment which appeared to have failed but was indeed taken from the card.
