I tried the Smartpacks and needed to change it as much as with normal litter, I did scoop regularly but the liner still got soaked with urine.

Mmmmm.... I don't know then. I speak as I find.

I'm sorry they haven't worked for you. I love them for my babies.

I have a hooded tray downstairs but took off the door flap. I have a regular tray upstairs. Both are about 3.5 inches deep.
I use Pets at Home antibacterial clumping litter. Clumps occasionally get stuck to the liner if the level of litter is low or if they pee right on the edge rather than in the middle of the tray. I declump twice a day (I have 4 cats) top up the litter regularly and probably only need to completely change the litter once a month.
I use litter liners from Wilkinsons, they're lightly scented, maybe the ones you were using were scented and the cats didn't like the smell.

I think the reason people are have problems with litter, even the clumping kind, and needing to empty trays frequently is that they're simply not putting enough in the tray or making it deep enough for urine to clump before reaching the base of the tray. Should be a minimum of six inches deep.

We use OKO now too, and although I found the cost troubling (compared to my old Tesco value) I think its actually better value in the end, and nice on the environment (both ecologically and nasally!).

Liners are to much hassle imo, we give the tray a good clean about once a month when we empty all the litter out and do a complete change.

Yeah, OKO might initially appear to be expensive compared to some litters but then I only need to use 2-3 of the large bags (40l) per year for three cats so it works out at less than £1/week.

If you litter deep enough you don't even need to change it out completely every month. I do mine 2-3 times a year, scoop daily and top up weekly. But then it also depends what people feed their cats on as that can greatly influence how frequently they pee and poop. I find feeding a raw diet minimises waste product as almost everything is digested and metabolised. And there is no smell either.
