Cat litter tray liners
Comments
-
I use a giant, high backed, covered tray, thick liners and wood chip pellet litter from B&M.
Depending on the weather (2 of my 3 cats will go ouside if it's not cold or wet), I need to de-lump every other day, and change the litter entirely every 10 to 14 days. Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0 -

Wow really?!
I change ours about every 3 or 4 days.
Mind you, we have two cats using one tray. They've always been fine with it for their whole lives (they are twin sisters).
They have a corner-shaped covered tray, which is really great, but tray liners do not fit. We use the thickest type of black bin bags instead. Easy peasy.
How do you use the black bags as tray liners, do you have to cut them?0 -

No, don't cut them. Turn them inside out and then put the bottom (tray) section inside the bag so that the opening is at one of the wall-facing sides. Then roll the open ends together, so that the tray is entirely inside the black bag (so that it is the black bag touching the floor too).
Then pour the cat litter in, and put the top back on. (The top fits back on fine even though the tray is in the black bag).
Then for emptying, simply slide the end of the black bag under the tray, and as you pull it up the old litter is all contained in the black bag, which you can then throw away.
(If that's confusing, I'll post pics if you're interested)
You need quite big black bags, and they need to be thick ones otherwise they get clawed.
Over the years I've tried all manner of methods and this I have found to be by far the easiest and cleanest.0 -

Yes please, pictures would be helpful. At the moment I have an open litter tray with liners and the cats pull them over and sometimes wee on the top but they do keep the base of the cat tray clean. I've tried those Catsan smartpacks before which are a great idea but I found myself having to change it regularly. Which litter do you use?0 -
Ok, so first I put a couple of sheets of newspaper in, just in case a cat puts a claw through the bag:
Then, put the whole bottom tray section into the inside-out bin bag:
Then, flatten the bin bag out inside the tray. Keep the edges of the bin bag at a part of the tray away from the entrance:
Then put the litter in:
Then tie up the opening of the bin bag in a loose knot, just to keep it out of the way
Then put the lid on and you're done :
Then to empty it, just pull the bin bag from under the tray, and up, tie it up and throw it away.0 -

Yup, really. The catsan Smart Packs have an absorbant layer that gets rid of the pee smell and soaks it up, scooped regularly you can get away with having them there for up to 2 weeks.
Mind you, my girls have a tray each (weirdly they do wees in one and poop in the other).
I'm hoping to get a covered one soon - the dog is quite partial to helping me poop a scoop.Back in the red :mad:

I use underbed storage boxes, they at 42L size from Tesco, about £5 each, but the sides are much deeper than regular cat trays. I've never had a mess out of the tray. I line it with a wad of newspaper then use litter on top.I just enter and forget...hoping to win something!0

Thank you for this, it is very helpful. I'm going to get a covered tray and try this method.0 -

I tried the Smartpacks and needed to change it as much as with normal litter, I did scoop regularly but the liner still got soaked with urine.0
