Cat litter tray liners

Another post. I like to use cat tray liners as they keep the tray much cleaner but I found my cats were doing their business outside of the tray so I did away with the liners and they stopped doing it but the tray was a devil to clean out so I'm trying them again but they are going outside of the tray again. What can I do about this?

I am also thinking of getting a hooded cat tray as my brother has one for their two cats and says it's great and it stops litter getting all.over the floor but I wonder if they are harder to keep clean and liners won't fit them. He cleans it out by hosing it down outside with the hose pipe but I live in a flat and don't have a garden to do this.

  • Not used litter liners in a long time. Just use a good clumping litter & is easy to clean the trays as you don't need to replace all litter very often, just scoop clumps & solids daily. I have hooded trays which most of my cats prefer - the lid can be easily taken off for cleaning so no more difficult than a normal tray. When I do clean them fully I remove litter & rinse the trays in the bath.

Not sure how many cats you have but behaviourists usually recommend a tray per cat plus a spare. Many cats won't 'go' in a tray which has already been used so this could possibly be a reason why they sometimes go outside of it?
  • I've got an entirely enclosed cat litter tray and use the Catsan Smart Pack - they come with a liner and are so easy to use.

Use clumping litter. We only clean our tray once every two months (we scoop out pees and poops daily of course!). :D

You can try a hooded tray but not all cats like them. We keep a hand-vac near the tray and that makes tidying up easy.
  • Catsan Smart packs are brilliant. I change my trays everyother week now and scoop daily.

And, yes, its meant to be one per cat and a spare :)

Thanks for your replies. I have two cats. I've tried clumping litter before and it just went like mud and stuck to the tray, it was the Catsan one too. I've also used the smartpacks and found myself having to throw that out often and it was costing more.

It wasn't deep enough. Clumping litter needs to be at least 3" deep so the pee balls don't reach the bottom. Catsan isn't great. There are good ones and it's brilliant having to clean the whole tray so infrequently. While they're more expensive, they don't work out much more because the bag lasts so much longer.

Lots of people on here can recommend specific ones. Might be worth giving them another chance?

World's best litter can get from amazon for about 13 per 15l bag.
I last bought a bag at the end of august and last did a full change of the tray in September.
    No smells
No smears or cement like litter.

    Wow really?!

I change ours about every 3 or 4 days.

Mind you, we have two cats using one tray. They've always been fine with it for their whole lives (they are twin sisters).

They have a corner-shaped covered tray, which is really great, but tray liners do not fit. We use the thickest type of black bin bags instead. Easy peasy.

We use oko for our cat, I just stuck my hand in and the litter looks to be around six to seven inches deep. We regularly top up the tray, it was last emptied in July.

I use OKO too and just scoop waste daily and top up weekly. The entire tray gets emptied and replaced with new litter about 2-3 times a year.
