Ostrich Egg

Options
A lady in work was talking and I overheard her say she had an Ostrich egg for her tea last night.

I didn't know we could get them let alone eat them.....She wouldn't say where she got it from, but I just wondered has anyone on here ever had one?

If yes what does it taste like? And how do you get it out of the shell? They look very big to me like dinosaur eggs.
It's better to regret something I did do than to regret something that I didn’t. :EasterBun

Here's how you prepare an ostrich egg, but I've no idea where you buy them from

The only time I have seen any for sale was in a little butchers/delicatessen in a nearby market town.

Back in the 70s, my mum used to decorate eggs and she used ostrich eggs occasionally.

I've a feeling she got them from a farm. I don't remember if we ate the contents.

Depending on where you live, you can get them from the market. I was tempted but would have needed a loaf's worth of soldiers.

Ostrich egg is really nice scrambled, for a LARGE group of people - had it a few times when I was younger, though we bought them from ostrich farms we visited in South Africa - it's quite a large part of tourism market in parts of the country.
If I remember right, we used a small drill to make a hole in the egg.

They're really really strong - as in a fully grown adult male can stand on it without it cracking.
