Good and Bad Buys from Aldi & Lidl *Do NOT Expire Please*

Aldi's 5 bird roast was a disappointment on Xmas day - cooked as per the instructions but was dry, tasteless and fell apart on carving despite resting for a good 20 minutes. Lot of stuffing (compared to the meat) which was "soggy" and a bit too sweet for my taste. Won't be buying again. The luxury mince pies with a frangipani topping were also disappointing. I thought they were the same as what I had bought last year which were lovely but the pack this year had really tough pastry and they tasted quite dry. The luxury stollen was nice and moist. Not opened the Pandoro cake yet. The un-oaked chardonnay is lovely - if you don't like chardonnay as a rule then the un-oaked version may surprise you with its freshness.0

We had the five bird roast again this year, ours was lovely, moist and tasty. It always does fall apart but we always enjoy it. I buy it as an extra as we have steak and gammon too.
I bought the mini macaroons this year, the Extra Special ones in the chiller cabinet, different chocolate flavours, they were really good, i also bought the frozen dessert shots, one with mango, one with raspberries and a chocolate mousse one, i'd definitely buy them again.0 -

I too had the Aldi five bird roast for a Yule celebration meal. Couldn't fault the flavour and it was extremely moist. Easily fed four as the main dish but could probably spread to six with extra accompaniments.0 -
I thought I would try this too over Christmas as I've had the Aldi sirloin steaks and they are really good.....what a disappointment this was tough dry meat and I cooked it as stated on the box....sadly I bought 2 I think the other one will end up in the bin0

Mine was the same. Think I mentioned it further up thread. Extremely disappointed with it. The beef was so tough even the dog turned his nose up at it lol0 -

Maybe I was unlucky with the 5 Bird Roast. I also have a Lidl 3 bird roast in the freezer still to cook. Maybe that one will be better. However - your post reminded me that I also bought the frozen desert shots and I forgot to take them out!0 -

But the creme brûl!e at £1.29 for two were absolutely delicious. As was the small turkey crown. Very succulent with plenty of flavour.
Had one of the beef Wellington a couple of years ago, and I agree with your critique. It was chewy and grey, which is not very good for fillet steak.0 -

I agree with you about the 5 bird roast, it was too sweet for me, and the stuffing was far too "sloppy". It was however better cold on the second and third day.0 -
I'm a great Aldi fan but the 'Roly Poly' free range turkey I bought for this year's Christmas dinner wasn't a great success. The meat was quite tough and gamey.
On a happier note, a local(ish) Aldi today had quite bit of reduced Christmas fare still on offer, including nuts, sweets, dozens of their iced Christmas cakes and various styles of Christmas puddings - so if you're looking for a bargain, don't assume they've all gone.0 -
Aldi have upset me. They appeared to have stopped doing their sensitive toothpaste (was 55p a tube). I now have to go back to branded which is easily double the price :money::rotfl::T0
