After trying the external mouse I called Tesco and the man ( Mark ) said there is obviously a problem with the touchpad and the drivers and software have had extensive work so offered a refund, which I gladly accepted.
Just a note to those that say ' can't be bothered ' I invite you to go through 4 months of phone calls and emails that are repetitive and rarely helpful.
Easy when you know how is what seems to be the watch word here. I bought my last lap top from PC World and I'm sure people will have things to say about them but the benefit is that at least the laptop can be taken in store to be looked at and hopefully sorted out, then the customer doesn't have to be a tech savvy individual.
In conclusion I will be buying tech from the high street.
I have decided to be computer free for a while to get my head back and bring my stress levels down.

I'm probably a little late on this. Win 8.1 was designed for touch screens , and the touchpad tried to emulate. This didn't really work (has changed in Win 10). The first thing I always did with new win 8/8.1 laptops was to go to the control panel/mouse and remove some of the gestures. This made using the touchpad (and/or mouse) much more comfortable.

As we all know win 8.1 was a dog.

It is my preference not to use HP, I've also experienced unhelpful post sales support (specifically with their "glued hinges!!)
