It sounds like you've been lucky in the past, with things working out of the box with no "tweaking".
I would uninstall McAfee, as it can interfere where not wanted, causing problems when it does.
Then I'd take the free upgrade to Windows 10, which is far better than 8.1 IMO.
Then see how it works. You'll get MIcrosoft Edge with Windows 10, which is the replacement for Internet Explorer. Use it if you like, but I'd seriously consider an alternative like Chrome.
You could then put McAfee back on if you really want it, but just because you've paid for it doesn't make it better than the free offerings...I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. A bit of time working through things like this may well help you, but I can see that could be a problem if you're not tech-savvy enough to do so, do you have a friend/family member that could help you?
I agree, I think the OP needs a helping hand from someone they know.
No offence implied OP, but you do appear to have a basic understanding of computers, and this isn't helping you or us here in this thread
As its not clear exactly the issue(s) you are experiencing as you haven't been forthcoming with enough info.0 -
You do know that this week Microsoft has stopped support for some browsers
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-35291938
and you do know Chrome browser is what some people use these days
Irrelevant as it's IE11 in W8.1 and IE11 will be around for some time to come.just a point...
No pc works as you expect it to "out-of-the-box", there are always tweaks/settings/updates/etc that you as the user needs to do before it works "as you'd expect" ..........
Sound advice as it's an integrated trackpad (no separate left and right click) with multi-touch gesture so takes a little getting used to from what you have experienced before.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -

Sounds like a faulty touch pad.
Take it back to Tesco, and insist they repair/replace it.0 -

I agree that's why I only call Tesco but the calls get directed to HP without me even speaking to Tesco.
Then go into a store, and speak to the manager.
Your contract is with the store you bought it from, not the manufacturer.
ETA: You might want to print out the relevant sections of their policy on returns, and take it with you to the store. Is your item faulty or damaged?
We do our best to make sure everything works perfectly, but if it doesn’t, our customer services team are here to help. You can reach them on 0800 323 4050 (or 0330 123 4050 local rate from a mobile). If your item was sold by one of our Tesco Partners, you’re still protected by our refunds and returns policy. Their contact details are on the Tesco Partner’s help page and on your receipt. Our customer services team will also be happy to help, just give them a call on the number above.
Within 30 days of receipt of the goods you will be offered a full refund, thereafter you may be offered a repair, replacement or partial refund depending on the product and usage.Returning an item sold by Tesco
In-store - You can take smaller items to any Tesco direct collection or order point. You’ll just need your proof of purchase. Find your nearest store with a Tesco direct desk on our store locator
Collection - If your item came by courier, we can arrange for a courier to collect it. Please call our customer services team on 0800 323 4050 (or 0330 123 4050 local rate from a mobile) to tell us when you’d like it collected.
By post - Books & entertainment items delivered by post can only be returned by post. We’ll pop a free returns label in with your order.
For all returns - Please let us have any original packaging, tabs, labels and accessories and please package all goods securely. Any flat pack items must be fully dismantled before packaging.
If you’re returning an item because you’ve changed your mind, there may be a deduction from your refund if it has been damaged, opened more than necessary to check it’s working, or used more than reasonably expected.

BTW. Are you approaching 30 days since purchase?0 -
So, you can't be bothered to plug it in to test via ethernet, which would determine instantly if it is a wi-fi issue or not, because 'everything has always worked on wi-fi before'. With an attitude like that, no tech support on the planet is going to be able to assist you.
If there is a wi-fi issue, then it doesn't matter how much RAM the laptop has!No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

Not necessarily, as gunjack suggested it may be a case of tweaking the track speed in the appropriate settings.0 -
We have two HP laptops bought in the last 6 months or so, and I've had a hell of a job with the wireless card drivers. I spent hours upgrading/reinstalling the drivers both from HP and the wireless card maker's website (Realtek in my case). I did eventually found one that worked, but it shouldn't hve to be that way.
Funnily enough, since upgrading to Windows 10, it;s been fine.....0 -
I have a Medion Akoya Tower (Win 8.1), a Medion Akoya Laptop (gone from win 8 to 8.1, to 10), a Hudl 2, a Connect 8" Tablet (Win 10) and a Prestigio MultiPad Wize, and every one has linked flawlessly to WiFi, straight from the box.
If a device is struggling to connect, straight from the box, I'd be inclined to think there was a fault with it.0 -

just proves how fickle some drivers can be - I'm the other way round, on an older HP business lappy that's my W10 test bed, I've had to reinstall both sound and wifi drivers many times over already, and currently after the last round of W10 updates, I now can't connect it to one wifi network only, which it's been quite happy to connect to previously ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0
