Tesco Tech did try updating the drivers ( so he says ) tonight remotely.. but after 20 mins of use the problem reoccurred..

Can you recall what you did or installed during that 20 minutes? software incompatibilities are always my worst nightmare
  • Thanks for your responses..
I am running the software that came installed which is 8.1..

I Have already done a windows recovery and a HP recovery ( they are different according to HP ) then let the updates install which takes hours because it will update 99 at a time then I have to restart the computer for the next 99 to load and keep doing this until there are no more updates.. The last Recovery was a HP one in which none of the drivers were updated so the HP Support updated them. All I programs I put on the laptop are Anti virus, C/Cleaner and Defraggler, all of which I have never had issues with in the past.
If I could just repeat, there have been issues with this laptop since I got it out of the box which is when I first called Tesco who told me that they would try a repair and if that didn't work they would refund / replace as I wished. This they are now denying and are telling me there is nothing they can do, which is what has wound me up the most. How can a computer be sold that has issues and then say 'we cant help' and still say that I can't have a refund / replacement...
  • The most frustrating thing is not scrolling down or up a page, moving up and down a screen is a very stop start affair.

    Plug in a USB mouse.

If it scrolls properly with the mouse, it's a faulty track-pad.

BTW. How long have you had it?
  • 30 days isn't enough time to find out if a computer is fixable when all of life is to be considered, Work etc..
The 'Support' centres might be open until 8pm but they will not do much at that time of night, they want to ring you back during the day which is when you are at work...
All life cannot stop just because a 'Support' want to speak to you, what are you supposed to do ? Call in sick ?? Not possible when, like me, you are self employed and don't work regular hours..

However, you can still request the retailer to repair or replace your item within six months of purchase without you having to prove the item came with the fault. There's plenty of on-line examples of letters to use quoting the Consumer Rights Act
^^^^^^^ This. You bought it from Tesco, so your consumer rights are with Tesco, not HP, and it looks like you're still within the 6 months.

Even after 6 months, if it isn't fit for purpose then you may have a claim, as it is 'reasonable' that a £440 laptop should work for longer than that.

I still think the consumer rights approach is your best bet, but on a technical level, have you tried the USB Mouse which Bedsit Bob mentioned? Which browser causes the problem? Have you tried another browser? Also, if you look in Task Manager (Ctrl-Shift-Esc) and select More Details and look at the Processes tab, does it show any process which is using a high amount of CPU or Disk usage? (Click the top of the columns to sort in ascending or descending order of these things.)
  • Well today I have bought a cheap USB mouse and it works far better than the touch pad..
I haven't tried another browser, I have never had a problem with the standard Windows 11.. I struggle to believe that there is anything amiss with my home set up as I have never had any problem in the past and the laptop I have is a 4 core AMD A10 with a massive memory so it should be mega quick, but it is not any improvement on the other tech I have... I have noticed that the components that the laptop are built of are all different brands, even the two memory sticks are different values and different brands. I have had a desk top PC with different memory sticks in it and it was ten times better when I replaced the memory sticks with matching brands and sizes. This is another reason why I am convinced the laptop should be replaced..

I agree that's why I only call Tesco but the calls get directed to HP without me even speaking to Tesco.. Tesco Direct seem to want to pass any complaints off so they don't have to repair / replace..

    just a point...

No pc works as you expect it to "out-of-the-box", there are always tweaks/settings/updates/etc that you as the user needs to do before it works "as you'd expect" - that is the nature of default settings. They are there for it to be functional, but not set up for every individual. The trackpad is one very common thing where this is especially true - you will need to go into the control panel > mouse section and set it for scrolling, gestures, etc that suit you before decrying it as faulty.....

You may just have been lucky with your previous purchases, in that the default settings you got just happened to suit you....

A bit of time working through things like this may well help you, but I can see that could be a problem if you're not tech-savvy enough to do so, do you have a friend/family member that could help you?
